i think it's because people in general are getting fatter. the standard back in the 90's that determined the fattest state, would now be considered the thinnest state.

No necessarily a good thing. Girls are developing earlier and getting bigger.

I'm sure this can be linked to the foods we eat. All the growth hormone pumped into animals and sprayed on crops, goes on our plate and into bodies.

Over the last 40 years, humans have grown larger/and fatter at an accelerated rate than at any point in the last 1,000!

I wouldn't be surprised if that by 2050, the average male Height and Weight is 6'00"/190lbs.

Can you cite any sources of your claims or are you just supposing and making this up?

Which fact? The fact that we're growing faster than in any other period in history? Or the hormones?

You don't need sources for that. You're here in DC. Walk into most any home built in the late 1800's / early 1900's. You feel like you're in a bit of a dollhouse.

As far as the steroids and hormones being pumped into animals, let's just say that the chickens we eat today bear NO resemblence in size, weight, bone density, or meat yield to a "normal" chicken.

The link that you do imply between what's given to livestock so that they grow larger, thereby causing the people that consume these animals to grow larger.

Let me put it this way. If I feed a cow beer and get it drunk and then slaughter that cow a week later, could you eat enough of that cow to get drunk? Or, has the original chemical been altered by processes within the cow such that the initial effects cannot be passed on to it's predator?

If the answer is as obvious as I believe it is, why do you believe it's such a different story for different compounds? You must believe it to be different to make the association that you do. Or, are you not really thinking about it that much and just making it up?

Or, is it really apples and oranges and you happen to know that it's different with growth hormones because someone already did the research and got the real answer, an answer that you've come across, and an answer that you can now point me to. IE a citation.

Soldiers today also have ~30 pounds more muscle mass than their Vietnam era predecessors. Can we blame this on hormones too?

Or perhaps more access to more food can cause better nutrition as well as obesity?

I forgot... hooray for boobies!

Agreed. I look at my Father, Uncles, and Grandfather's 'Nam, Korea, and WW2 era Army and Navy pics, and they all have the physique more resembling a road biker (Lean, sinewy) than what you see on today's soldiers.

Absolutely improved vitamins and nutritional supplements/nutritional meals have to do with this and a better overall understanding of proteins and carbs work on the body. But then again, these are "trained" bodies not natural state bodies.

A liver processes alcohol. There's an organ designed to do this safely. There are no organs designed to safely continually metabolize excess (excess meaning more than what the body produces and needs naturally) hormones and steroids. Not that it matters, these animals aren't being raised to live a full life cycle anyway, so if you're killing them as soon at they hit maturity no biggy.

Steroids and hormones are metabolized and synthesized by the animal to "feed" and stimulate growth, right - but the issue is that all this stuff remains in the tissue. It doesn't all break down and disappear immediately.

Moreover, whatever extra you put in a body that it doesn't need (or doesn't have capacity to use) it either secretes or stores in tissue and fat until at which point it can break it down. You don't piss/poop out hormones unfortunately. You're continually dosing yourself with micrograms of this stuff day after day.

Additionally, once that animal dies any remaining drug goes unmetabolized stays in the tissue and goes into you when you eat it. But I'm not talking about HUGE doses like popping a hypodermic needle ...this is a slow continual bombardment.

For a full grown adult, not so bad - but for a small child or someone near puberty, suddenly you have all this trace growth material floating in the system long before the body wants you to produce it naturally.

I understand the idea and the theory, but I question if there's any truth to the theory. It's not a far stretch of the imagination to think that because the cow is given extra hormone supplements, that there will therefore be residues in the final product.

But as far as I've been able to find, it's only that, a stretch of the imagination not supported by evidence. That's why I was wondering if you could actually cite any sources of evidence to support the theory.

Here's a study by Cornell University on the subject. In short, their findings are that either no residues are found, or those that are found remain within the normal variance of animals that do not receive supplemental hormones and is therefore indistinguishable.

It has nothing to do with hormones to our food stock. Darwin is at work combined with technology.

Humans are the only mammals that have females with swollen breasts when not with child. Natural selection created our species to this form, and we perpetuate it with the male fascination. (Oh, and it is an admirable quality, no doubt for a female and for me to admire).

Watch Wall-E - at this rate that is where we are heading; but fortunately human nature generally gets in the way of nature and we will off ourselves before we become that lethargic...the physically dominant with some tech savvy should continue to control our species for some time.
