Question Bought a car from MD and now registering in VA? - December 13, 2016, 08:13 PM

As the title suggests, have bought a ca from MD and will be registering it in VA.

Are there any waivers I can get in VA? If inspections/emissions were recent in MD, can they help in VA at all?

Or any other things? I know about motorcycles, since they have no emissions and safety inspection in VA is needed.

Thanks for any of your help and input.

Per this website: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/emissions.html

"If your vehicle is being registered for the first time in Virginia and has a current valid emissions certificate (performed in the last 12 months), it may be titled and registered without a Virginia emissions inspection."

and

"Your vehicle must meet Virginia's emissions inspection requirements if it is garaged in one of the localities listed below:

Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, or Stafford
Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas or Manassas Park"

You can go register the car no problem, but until you have a current emissions test, the DMV will only give you 30 days tags. You will still need to get a safety inspection.

Luckily, if the car legitimately passed MD inspection, it will breeze through VA if nothing has changed. A safety/emissions inspection can be done in 20 minutes if you find a place with no line.

Thanks so much guys, appreciate your input and advice. So will have to do both emissions and inspections, altogether.

I thought MD had different safety inspection regulations? I heard it was a one time inspection, but could be wrong. Hopefully that's not the case, otherwise it could need work to pass safety inspection.

yup you will definitely need emissions (in NOVA) if your further south some counties don't have emissions.

In MD you only inspect the car once then register it and never have it inspected again, until a new owner buys it....

Thats right. Or you can buy a car from 92 and older to throw on historic tags. Floorboards could be gone but hey no emissions or inspection!

I should move to MD then

I was able to successfully register without any problems.

Thanks again to all for helping out, have temp tags for 1 month and have to do emissions during this time.
