Calling all .NET Divers - May 10, 2007, 10:58 AM

Thinking of setting up a beginning of the season camping/diving trip down to Lake Rawlings down in Southern VA. Sure it's a quarry/lake, but it's inexpensive, the vis is good, and it's an excuse to get wet.

I was thinking of doing it the first weekend of June, 2nd and 3rd.

Drive down Sat morning, dive all day Sat, camp out, dive all day Sun, and then drive back up.

Costs
$20 Diving admission per day
$10 Camping admission per night

For those that don't have gear:
Complete Scuba Package
(BCD, tank, regulator, computer, mask, fins, snorkel, wetsuit, and boots; UNLIMITED AIR FILLS)
$65.00

For those that have gear but no tank:
Tank + 1 free fill
$12.00

NITROX Tank + 1 free fill
$24.00

Post up if you're interested.

I'm interested.

I got Nitrox cert but an extra 12 bucks just to have a shorter surface time doesn't seem worth it.

what thickness of suit will we need?

Yeah I'm not bothering with Nitrox for the quarry.

As for suit thickness, my friend who's an instructor and is taking a student down there the same weekend suggests a 7mm.

That was her suggestion, said the air will be fine but the water doesn't truly warm up until mid July.

Yes....Quarrys never get that warm for some reason and when you get down to the thermal line, you'll notice the water get cold really quick.

On the bright side the wetsuit fits a lot better once you get down to the thermal line in the crotchal region.

Quick question, is there anything worth seeing in the quary?

My dive experience is limited, and I enjoy the hell out of it, but unless Im looking at a wreck or coral and aquatic life its prety damn dull for me.

Most quarry's have things in them to go look for. Plus its just a reason to go out and do something and get some dive time.

We can always go down to the ocean and do the same thing, but I dont have a boat, and you cant really see anything that close to shore anyway. At least not on the east coast here.

They've got some stuff sunk in the quarry that you can see, some planes, boats, buses, etc, but if you're looking for exotic animals, beautiful coral, or other such things you're going to be disappointed.

As Myke said it's just an excuse to get wet and it's only a couple hours away.

I'm interested in this, and I'd probably bring along another diver.

The quarry I did my open water in a looong time ago had stuff in it like a sunken boat, a steam shovel, cars, etc... it's basically like swimming through a junkyard. The friend I'd bring has been there a couple of times, I'll ask her what's down there.

From the Rawlings website:

Q. How did all the “good stuff” that we see get there?

A. Now that is a challenging question. The real cool ”stuff”, like Ms. Nikki and Wayne, our obligatory school busses, were pushed off the ledge facing the west side of the lake. After sinking to a depth of 45’, several huge lift bags were attached to these attractions to “float” them to a depth just below the surface. Each bus was then moved using lift bags, a johnboat and trawl motor for transporting these to the desired location in the lake where they were sunk; the air, when released from the lift bags, allowed the bus to sink to its eventual spot on the lake floor. This same technique was used in the sinking of the PADI Wagon, a sunken van, and several cars that adorn the bottom of the lake. Other “good stuff” like Rogue Forest, spoofing our fearless leaders, shows the faces of the many contributors who have provided attractions for the divers. Besides our many boats, to include The Replacements sailboat shell (the one used by Keanu Reaves in the movie of the same title), there are several training platforms, our resident Buzz the diver (who wears a BC and ski pole), two fish hatcheries for small-fry, two basketball courts, a CD forest, a swim-thru in shallow water, and a simulated kelp bed for improving buoyancy. The coolest may very well be the Sea Witch guardian of Dead Zone City and the many skulls adorning the rocks at depths of 45’-50’.

That's going to be your call, but my logs show water temperature between 61 and 66, back in 2002 and 2003, for late may and early june. I'm a temperature wuss, so that's 7mm, hood and gloves for me.

club med has a 50% summer special for the week
the diving instructors are thorough and the views are out of this world.
