I've never gone there, but have had some friends get cars from there and they are pricey. The only advice I can give is: have financing lined up BEFORE you go to any dealer - you can always choose alt financing when it comes to signing the paperwork, but having the $$ in hand (so to speak) always gives you a leg up and can prevent the dealer from swindling you into extras - like worthless extended warranties. The dealer ain't gonna make much money on the car - they make money by convincing simpletons that they need things like rust protection, pre-paid maintenance plans and extended warranties. Plus, when the dealer tries to swindle you toward their in-house financing, you can always play them off against each other to get a better interest rate.

I've purchased two vehicles from them, both were below the cost of similar vehicles at other dealers. The price is the price, they won't budge usually unless its something they really want to get rid of.

When I met my girl she had just bought a car from them. Even though she had good credit they facked her on apr and she was in the negative when we were trading it in 4 years later.

I agree about having your own financing setup before you go in, but I completely disagree about what people say about 'high' prices. I have bought a handful of vehicles from various Carmax locations with all their prices well below NADA, Edmunds, and KBB values. Also you can't go wrong with their warranty program. All my vehicles were purchased with between 20-30K miles and I was given a warranty to 100K miles.

This.
CarMax makes their profit through volume. They want high turnover.
If a car has had low interest and has been in inventory >90 days, there will be a slight concession on the list price.
I purchased a Passat from them in the same manner. Car was on the lot for too long and a manager took $250 off the price and discounted the extended warranty.

Search New Cars, Used Cars - Find Cars at AutoTrader.com for the same year range/model. If he is willing to drive, then extend the range to 300+ miles. He will either find a better deal, or corroborate the Carmax vehicle as being priced at fair market value.

They never give in. So I never give in on what I want for my trade in. So it never works out. I have better luck using carguru.com

I bought a Tacoma from them. Good price, and got 2.9% from Toyota when I did.

I thought maybe they changed up and deals sometimes depending. I told her I can not be much help at Car Max. Also told her to get her CU to pre approve her first.

You have better luck getting more for a trade in if you're buying a vehicle from them then you do haggling a price when you buy.
