Can't sleep, Clown'll eat me... - September 26, 2011, 12:56 PM

I can't sleep worth a damn lately. Paranoia coupled with weird house noises keeping me up at night. Last night it was so bad, I laid awake until about 0430. This pts shit is really starting to piss me off. Anybody here dealing with this have any suggestions that work for them? I've found enough alcohol will usually knock me out pretty well, but I'd like not to make that too much of a habit.

I read. Lots

Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.

PTSD-related sleep loss is a mothafucka. It sucks

Ive known folks that came back from the sandbox and had the same issue, they had to use meds to get them to sleep, try taking some Benadryl or Melatonin.

I feel your pain..for the last 15 years. The only thing that helps me is some good hip bumping and massage afterwards. 2-3 hrs of sleep is all I get most times.

Another thing I do find helpful is having some one to lend me their ear and I talk about it.

I'm really trying to stay away from medication dependancy for this issue.

This is a lot easier said than done, I'm sure you know. The misses tries to listen sometimes, but fails terribly in the empathy department. Besides, it's pretty difficult to speak to someone who doesn't know the feeling. She suggested a therapist. After a two hour meeting the therapist recommended some pretty serious psycho drugs. I thought that was a bit much after only a two-hour sit-down. You're right about talking, however. I think I'll call an old friend.

I think maybe reading might help, I'll give that a shot tonight. I just picked up the new Richard Dawkins book, so it should be a good read.

Medication is what they tried to do for me as well. I turned it down. I generally get about 4-5 hours of sleep if I am lucky anymore, so I understand how you feel as well. Having someone to talk to helps also. I saw a therapist for almost a year. Not really sure it helps me with sleeping, but helps get some of the thoughts I used to have out of my head and some of the fears/issues! Good Luck man, it sucks!

First, find a PSYCHOLOGIST not a PSYCHIATRIST.

That will help keep them from medicating you.

I'd avoid deep shit like Dawkins if you're already depressed having trouble sleeping.

I find talking to other veterans helps. If you need to talk, PM me and we'll get together.

Not depressed. I'm actually a very happy guy. I'm just paranoid all the damn time lately.

Alcohol ain't gonna help...it messes up your sleep cycle. I can have 11 Bud Lights, and wake up at 4 am, hungover as shiz. I can have 26 bud lights and sleep for a day and a half. No bueno.

I don't know much about PTSD, but try some natural hippie-type sleep aids, I really like these

cheap to, even the guy at the shop said everything else is kinda a ripoff but these. one tab a night and im good, they taste like ass though
