Carfax anyone? - June 3, 2018, 05:29 PM

Does anyone have a carfax account willing to run a report for me? I checked out a car today and the lady said she was the only owner and no accidents but it looked like the front drivers side fender may have been painted.

WVGAV7AX7DW023252 - 2013 vw tiguan

Thanks!

I'd steer clear of ALL Tigs, Jon.

IIRC, the 2.0 engine in them was plagued with a few problems.

I am guessing the car is not a "lemon" in the traditional sense of being bought back by the dealership, but it was in a decent wreck?

As long as you know a reputable shop fixed it, I am okay with accidents if the price is reflective of that experience.

I normally dont either. The car looked clean. I checked for structural damage under the hood and couldnt find any. I wonder how bad the accident really was.

Some accidents look worse than they actually are.

Mostly superficial panels that were engineered to sacrifice themselves - it can make a $10,000 repair look more like the car should be totaled.

Nonetheless, so long as the unibody is straight, not much energy transferred into the frame, and drivetrain and accessories are in good working order, to me, the car is still roadworthy - just at a large discount.

One thing I will not accept is the Seller being dishonest about its history. At that point our negotiation is concluded and I'm walking away - and will warn others not to buy the vehicle to boot.

I'm picking up a used Volvo XC90 for the family. The seller was very honest about the history including two previous accidents (hit a deer and a rear end collision). The trucked checked out with Volvo CPO after the repairs which made me feel confident, but the more important thing was that the seller was honest.

Hmmm... maybe you got lucky.

Or stayed on top of engine maintenance like a Hawk.

I heard some horrendous things about the VW 2.0s FSI/DI engines. Specifically with respect to carbon build-up on the valves.

Couple of coworkers have had the 2.0 engine worked on. One has a 2013 Tiguan where the timing belt tensioner went out and stranded him. Well under 100k miles.

Another guy had a 2013 GTI and had carbon buildup problems to the point where the car behaved very poorly. I wonder if this is an issue with a lot of direct injection cars since the valves can't be chemically cleaned by gasoline or additives like they would in an engine with port injection.
