Cell phone repair suggestions - November 14, 2017, 03:44 PM

I have a Samsung Galaxy Alpha whose fingerprint scanner has gone to the poops. I don't care for the phone other than it has a private folder with files I want to save and I can't access without the fingerprint scanner.

I just went to a UbreakitIfixit store and the half retarded kid that worked there told me they can't fix it as it's not a common model (??????).

Does anyone know of a reputable shop that knows how to work on phones in a legit way? I'm in Falls Church so it would be great if it wasn't too far away.

Alternatively I read that BestBuy acts like a Samsung go-to place for repairs, any experience with that?

It doesn't have a pin or pass code backup?

Any phone I've had with a fingerprint sensor always had to have that setup as well.

^^^This.
The manufacturers and app devs know fingerprint scanners will not work all the time, so they allow you default to back-up and open with a passcode or pattern.

Go to your settings panel.

Also, if you want to replace it altogether HMU. Works around the world.
I'll give you a nice price.

It does have an alternate pin code, however it never gets that far: when you call up a program that uses the fingerprint scanner, the phone just freezes until you hit the back button, so it's no use.

And I already have an S7 Edge, this is just a backup phone that has files I want to have access to behind this damned private folder

Is this phone backed up? Can you restore to another device and access the data?

Unfortunately you can do all the above, but you can't access the private folder info (otherwise it wouldn't be much of a private folder now, would it? hahaha)

So I take it there's no way to disable the finger print scanner device wide like in an Iphone. When you go to the device settings and disable touch ID it disable it system wide - even for the apps that have it enabled.

Sometimes, not always, but sometimes cellphone stores will have special technician level tools that will allow them to bypass and open low level security including fingerprint sensors.

but if you had a similar device you maybe could load that same biometric software and access the data? That is assuming the biometric data is backed up as well as the data.

or maybe a tech can clone your phone? not just restoring it.

Unfortunately you can backup everything EXCEPT that folder, so moving it to another device is not an option. The only option is to have the home button (and it's fingerprint scanner) repaired...

I take that NOBODY knows a place to take it to? I guess I'll take it to bestbuy then :-/
