Checking ip address? - March 3, 2010, 12:05 PM

OK I have a couple bikes on craigslist and seam to be getting quite a bit of people, mostly females, interested in them. But as soon as I say sure you can buy it or lets talk they drop off. So how can or can you use email addy's to get an IP number or some way to find out if they all are from the same asshole. Most likely that asshole is on this site and I have a good idea who it is but just need to prove it to build a case against them for fraud.

Any input that is legit is welcome!

Whats the email provider? Maybe I'm mistaken but you can run on a whois on a domain (hotmail.com, gmail.com, etc.) and figure it out.

Assuming they're different email accounts but from the same smtp server, you can check the header.

Example header

The bolded area is the originating smtp server. In reality, unless they are very particular with how they send, you will not be able to determine their IP address using email communication.

However, if the continually send through the same smtp server you could determine facts about them that you might be able to use.

Also note, almost none of this would hold up in court.

Mike, maybe you can apply some mail filters. Is there any wording or something unique about all the fake emails you been getting?

Nah, you can find out their country, state and city though usually...and their ISP........ With IP address you can get court order to ISP to give up an addy, but thats only for serious crimes, like a 14 year old girl downloading Jonas Brothers on limewire

create a site have them click on the site and then get their IP. But if they are reading this, they prob. already know you are out there looking for them.
