Smile Christmas Miracles - December 24, 2009, 08:38 PM

MARTINSBURG - In what may turn out to be a Christmas Eve miracle, two men, who happened upon a burning home Thursday morning in Bunker Hill, were able to rescue a woman trapped inside.
The woman, whose name has not been released yet, was taken to WVUH-East City Hospital in Martinsburg where she was undergoing treatment for severe smoke inhalation, police said.
She was found unresponsive lying on a couch after the two men, identified as Andrew McDermott, of Gore, Va., and Jesse Franks, of Bunker Hill, ran into the burning home and were able to carry her out after calling 911.

At about 3:15 a.m. Thursday, McDermott and Franks were travelling southbound in their vehicle on Winchester Avenue in Bunker hill when they saw what they believed to be a structure fire at a townhome located at 15 Creedmore Dr., police said.
As McDermott and Franks approached the home, they saw flames and smoke at the first floor of the residence near the front door. The two contacted 911 to report the fire and then went to the door to attempt to make contact with anyone inside.
After receiving no response and observing the smoke filling the structure quickly, the two men broke a window at the front of the residence and later forced open the door and entered the lower level of the structure, Lt. Gary Harmison of the Berkeley County Sheriffs Department said in a news release.

They then located the unresponsive female lying on a couch in the living room area in the back of the home. McDermott and Franks carried the female to the front of the home as Deputies Jason Wolfe, Bruce White and Terry Shetley, Cpl. Jarrett Jones and Lt. Dan McGown arrived at the scene minutes after hearing the call being dispatched.
All of the deputies entered the smoke-filled structure and conducted a search for additional occupants.

Firefighters from the South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the scene a few minutes later where they continued searching for anyone else inside and began firefighting operations.
South Berkeley firefighters were later assisted by the Clearbrook Fire Department and the 167th Air National Guard Fire Department.
No one else was found in the home, police said.

Jones and McGown provided first aid and maintained the females airway until emergency medical services personnel from the Berkeley County Emergency Ambulance Authority arrived and assumed care for the victim before she was transported to the hospital.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and will remain under investigation by Harmison.

Simply AWESOME! I hope this woman pulls through.
