Cobra iRadar Radar Detector - Anyone Using or Has Tried This? - March 16, 2011, 11:49 AM

Since this region is going camera crazy (I know of 6 that have gone up in the last 4-5 months) I'm considering investing in a radar detector - but I want something that doesn't stand out should I get spotted or pulled over.

Valentine 1's with the remote display are expensive.

Was figuring at least with this, I could say I was using my phone hands free.

When you get pulled over for using radar how is it proved? A search?

I've never used radar dectors so I don't know. But I mean what if you had a car with a radar dector built IN the car? Like what is the proof required to present a citizen with a citation????

Why are radar dectors even illegal? I mean people who speed are going to speen anyways....I don't think it positively reinforces speeding...hell even when I am driving the speed limit and a run up on a LEO I use more caution then when they are not present...I actually tense up a helluva a lot b/c I'm not really comfortable with police/driver interaction in a traffic sense....I'm not really comfortable around police officers in general.

What do you value more? Life or Image?

In Virginia, you get ticketed for merely having one in the car. Doesn't matter if you're using it or not.

I think the law is that if you have it plugged in it is illegal. It may even be something weird like if the power cord is plugged into the unit, it is illegal. Otherwise, they can't do anything to you. I had a friend get busted in VA not too long ago.

I'm pretty sure that I read some time back that the cops in state where detectors are illegal have radar-detector detectors built into their vehicles or radar guns or something of that nature. There are radar-detector detector jammers that a lot of the truckers use, but it's a never ending cat and mouse game.

Dunno the validity of what I read but just something to look into I suppose.

One of the locals on the board can deny or confirm...but I have a buddy on the PWC force and he mentioned to me b4 that if they are running radar and you have a detector/jammer up it signals back to them. How much weight does that statement hold, I am not sure because when I've talked to him about it after that one convo when I think it slipped out, he will neither deny nor confirm and says he vaguely remembers it....

Detectors like the V1 are shielded and put off a very feint signature, which is part of what adds to their cost. Cheaper ones aren't and their signature can be detected by detector detectors.

its not that it has a detector.. its that it jams the lidar/radar system and makes the system basically freak out... for example... if you are going down the road speeding by yourself and you come over the hill and their system freaks out and doesnt read a speed-you're getting pulled over bc they know you have one. now in a pack of cars its a lot harder to tell who has it vs who doesnt. if you use V1 which is prob the best out there dont get caught they'd love to tear up your car searching for it lol

Oh and don't forget VA has rearward firing radar as well. They can catch you even when you're going in the opposite direction.
