Comcast vs Verizon FIOS: Now I have a choice. - October 5, 2011, 05:20 PM

In my development Comcast has been the only game for hi-speed internet except for satellite. I haven't owned a TV for more than 20 yrs so I have had only internet service.

It started out around $35 per month 8 or 9 yrs ago when I ditched dialup. Currently its now $69/month internet only - no TV. Service slows significantly in the eves, and drops out more often than it should. Its not great service but mostly its adequate.

My comcast service level is "Performance", from my service statement:

"Downstream speed up to 12 Mbps/Upstream speed up to 2 Mbps"

The whole "up to" is BS. Why can't it be a minimum service level?

Verizon is now laying cable in my neighborhood for FIOS. They dug up my lawn today. I want to call comcast and tell them I'm going to ditch them for FIOS. So I want to play them off of FIOS and get a rate reduction.

Not sure how long it will take for FIOS to get turned on. But I want to play them off against FIOS. Anyone done this? What kind of a rate reduction have you achieved?

Cable companies are retarded. They'd rather lose subscribers than lower rates. They will happily let you march off to Fios. Then, after a bunch of people do that, they'll lower rates and beg you all to come back. But by then you'll be enjoying the FUCK out of fiber.

Get fios. Fuck cable.

FIOS

If Verizon doesn't piss you off too much, definitely go Fios

Wanting to know if you've called comcast to tell them you're leaving.... unless they give you a rate reduction.

And if you did, what was the rate reduction you got?

Comcast definetlley sucks the high hard one, well known fact. I haven't had a TV in 20 + yrs so premium channels aren't going to sway me. If that's what to expect when I approach comcast then that'll be a pleasure to leave them behind.

The name change from comcast to xfinity was seen by me as an attempt to try and loose comcast's consistent profile of lousy performance and service behind. But I'd like to set the record straight:

Comcast sucks

-and-

xfinity sucks

No TV?! Then how do you watch MotoGP?!

Go FIOS. I have had nothing but problems with Crapcast and dont see going back in the foreseeable future..So far, FIOS - not a single snafu for I think 2-3 years now.

IIRC, Comcast was rated #1, NUMERO UNO, in the country for the worst customer service.

Switched to FIOS a couple years ago. We still have an issue with our DVR boxes every now and again, but it's not anywhere near the amount of bullshit we went thru with Crapcast.

Have fun with FIOS. You will love it.

I'll chime in because I have a special hate for comcast. If you have the choice stay away from them. I liked directv when I had them. I have FIOS now and I would choose it a hundred times before ever going back to comcast.

I did it back and forth between comcast and fios. Eventually I got about $20 off the comcast monthly bill. i just kept calling the other company back and forth.

as soon as you say "i need to cancel my membership", they should transfer you to a person that tries to get you to stay.

but, go with FIOS. Just tell them your current comcast bill is (insert desired amount here) and get them to match it.

you will spend at least an hour doing this. FIOS is a million times better though

FIOS: the service is awesome. The customer service is fricking horrible.

I'm now stuck in a situation where somehow, random PPVs keep getting bought (2 per month) onto my account to the tune of about 12$.

I do NOT buy random PPVs, nor does anyone else who lives here. I've locked out all the receivers with parental controls and a password only I know so that you cannot buy PPVs, but they keep showing up.

So each time this happens, I have to call up customer service, take about an hour out of my life to convince the person that I'm NOT ordering the PPVs and get them to void them off.

Its completely frigging lame. I don't really know what else to do short of cancelling my service completely and starting over from scratch. But that will bump my 50/20 internet that I'm grandfathered in with 80$ a month up to 140$ a month and that's just dumb.

Arghhhh I hate Verizon!!

I read somewhere that comcast has something like 80% of the cable Internet market share. So they're not hurting for your business yet.

As to your original question, no idea! I'm buying into direct fiber optic though. New subscriber, Tv + interwebs for $75 a month, no term requirement and it's never slow.

Yeah I hear a lot of grief comes with fios bills. We'll see.
