Computer question - September 13, 2008, 06:04 PM

I think I already know the answer but want to double check before I raise hell....
So I bought a Compaq laptop a few years ago, close to top of the line back in the day. It was advertised with 512MB of memory. So I am just screwing around last night and go into my hardware profile. The hardware profile lists 384MB of memory, I'm like WTF?
Today, I call HP and explain my situation to the customer support guy and he tells my that the 384 is what is left of the memory, the rest is being used. I come back and say (i'm not a computer guy) that as far as I knew, the amount of RAM was going to stay the same. He tells me that I am incorrect and tells me that memory works in the same way as a hard drive and reduces as information is added.
Question, did I get shorted memory?

My bike run's on snake oil.... thanks to BG.

You have the right amount some of it is probably shared video memory.

I believe if you go to the "system' icon (start and select control panel, then "system") the first page should give you your system RAM before allocation. When you 're running programs some of that is allocated (shared) with the video card. If the system memory is only 384, then that's odd. Did you watch the memory test when the laptop starts to see what the RAM number is during the memory test. If its less than the 512 (give or take a few) then maybe one of the RAM chips on the SODIMM has gone bad. The good news...RAM is dirt cheap!
