Conficker...don't get your SMiSH stolen - March 30, 2009, 04:15 PM

April 1 is doomsday

You may have recently seen media coverage of an April 1 Doomsday worm. However, if you're worried about the Conficker worm striking on April 1st, don't be. In most respects, Conficker (a.k.a. Downadup or Kido) is just another piece of malcode threatening Windows computers. The known risks it represents are minimal. The companies technology defenses are set and we are alert for significant changes in the risk Conficker presents. At this time, the threat risk has changed little, despite what is being publicly reported.

Around the world, the Conficker worm has managed to infect a large number of computers. Some researchers estimate infection rates globally to be in the millions since January. On April 1, the Conficker worm will simply start taking more steps to protect itself. After that date, machines infected with one variant of the worm may not be able to get security updates or patches from Microsoft and from many other vendors.

Home computer users are encouraged to review the non-technical write up available at Symantec's web site for additional details and answers to frequently asked questions:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme...conficker_worm

There is an emerging SMiShing threat underway that all employees and home computer and handheld device users should be aware of. SMiShing is a form of criminal activity using social engineering techniques similar to phishing. The name is derived from "SMS phISHING". SMS (Short Message Service) is the technology used for text messages on cell phones and other handheld devices.

Similar to phishing, SMiShing uses text messages to deliver the "bait" to get you to divulge your personal information. The "hook" (the method used to actually "capture" your information) in the text message may be a web site URL, however it has become more common to see a phone number that connects to an automated voice response system.

Currently, the reports of the SMiShing threat are from the UK and Germany, but it is expected to traverse quickly. The text of the SMS is typically along these lines: " Someone posted your full personal and banking information at insert-bad-url-here web site you must remove it now". The text varies slightly in some of the samples seen.

The web site typically has malware in the form of a trojan.

As with other scams, the best action is not to respond to any unexpected solicitation messages -- received on either a cell phone or computer -- but to delete them.

Microsoft put out a patch to this last year. Are you up to date?
If so no worries.

The variants still take advantage of the same hole.
The patch simply locks down a registry setting so it can't be written to.
If you look up the virus and find the microsoft link it will explain the entire registry settings.
Also if you had been infected part of the worm is to restrict you from going to microsoft patch site and most anti virus sites.

Also note many rogue companies are posting up fraudulent claims that they can scan, detect and clean your machine.
