contracting rates - January 28, 2010, 11:30 AM

lol.. Not SB related at all but hey, that's never stopped anyone..

So here is a question.. You can PM me any answers..
Maybe no one else has any idea either.. lol..

What is the going rate for a SW contractor who does:
c/c++/php/perl/scripting/linux/solaris/rdbms/html/css
25 years exp..

I have someone asking me to go to CA for c++/linux for 9 months..
I figure.. If they want me to move to CA, I should ask top dollar..
But I have no idea what that would be and I don't want to shortchange myself again..

Thx..

The rate will vary depending on if its all inclusive or you're able to bill for expenses.
Also varies if its Govt Cleared work, non cleared, or commercial.

I'd shoot for a bare min. of no less than $70-80 / hr assuming you're able to bill expenses. For cleared work I'd tack on $5-10 more.

i have heard that tech jobs in CA are cheaper because the market is flooded there. A former co-worker came to DC from LA because he made double here.

I bill 60$/hr doing side work for a couple companies building webtools for them. A current job I'm on, I maintain the machines the tools are running on (linux, debian), and I built from scratch using php/extjs/mysql/html. They are very happy and keep throwing me work, which is nice! Private sector, not government.

This is of course side work and not full time. No benefits, 1099'd so I have to take care of paying estimated taxes on it, etc.

And if you move to California, depending on the location, it is much more expensive to live than VA, and much much more than MD. If you are in the bay or silicon valley areas, mucho $$$$. Like, if you aren't making over 100k, you are going to be renting in a small apartment.

My full time job is based out of Sunnyvale, and I travel out there several times a year. My ex-boss made bank and he lived in a tiny little place (but that mighta just been his choice).

One of my best friends currently lives in Sunnyvale working for a firm in SF. He's making $55/hr doing SW dev with benefits as a W2 employee and still lives in a shack like apartment.

I don't think anyone can tell you what rate will work, but I suggest:

Take your salary now (or rate). Add 10-15% for cost of living adjustment. Also add another 15% to cover your expenses (insurance, 401k, etc). If you are not able to bill expenses, add another 5%.

Don't settle for any less ... its just not worth the risk right now.

There are standards for billable rates, especially in any position that may deal with government contracts based on certain mitigating factors. Knowing these rates is a huge boon to anyone seeking employment.
