Post Crop Duster Crashes near Frederick; Pilot Walks Away - July 12, 2006, 11:13 AM

FREDERICK, MD- A small plane went down in a cornfield in Frederick Tuesday afternoon.

The pilot was flying back to the Martinsburg area when he started having problems.

Maryland State Police told NBC25 that around two o'clock a Martinsburg pilot, 38-year-old Timothy Folk, was flying back from crop-dusting around Baltimore.

Folk’s engine started to smoke. He tried to make an emergency landing at Frederick Municipal Airport. He lost all power and went nose down into a cornfield.

The plane then flipped over. He managed to get out of the plane and walked away, relatively unharmed.

Folk complained of a sore shoulder but he refused medical treatment.

He is a co-owner of Tri-State Aero, a small crop-dusting company.

Folk’s wife told NBC25 he's been flying for years and occasionally have problems like this.

“My brother was outside and he saw the helicopter and we're used to seeing them all the time but he saw them go around and then they landed on the other side of the trees and they went back up and circled a lot. One of the patrol officers came in our driveway and asked us how to get over there and he came back,” said Greg Saylor, a neighbor.

The FAA has been to the crash site but it could be weeks before they finish their investigation.

Naw the pay sucks, the chemicals stink and get in your eyes, the hours are long, and you don't get paid for all of it, not to mention dangerous. Only banner towing would be considered worse (except that you get to look at all the lovely ladies on the beach but your eyes have to be real good to tell the hotties from the beached whales from 500 feet up)

*cough* They're called binoculars *cough* ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Yes, crop dusting sucks big time. Banner towing isn't bad, but it's SOOOOOOOO FREAKIN' BORING.

Me - "Time for a 180 degree turn..."

*5 minutes later*

Me - "Time for another 180 degree turn...."

Jeez!!! You did that??? Ouch! What a way to earn hours........I would have flown into the ocean just to end the boardom. Course flying 10 minute tourrist flights in a helicopter over Disney isn't much better. At least I got the pucker factor of a landing close to gross weight every 15 minutes or so to break up the monatonany.

I did it, but not for very long. I did it 1 day and said "Nope, this isn't for me."
