Cure for cancer? - August 8, 2007, 08:22 AM

Electric Fields Kill Tumors

An Israeli company is conducting human tests for a device that uses weak electric fields to kill cancer cells but has no effect on normal cells. The device is in late-stage clinical trials in the United States and Europe for glioblastoma, a deadly brain cancer. It is also being tested in Europe for its effectiveness against breast cancer. In the lab and in animal testing, treatment with electric fields has killed cancer cells of every type tested.

Death catches everyone eventually. This may ensure a few year extra to many families. Cool find.

this logic doesn't work for non-manageable, yet terminal diseases.

true, you could make an argument for some things, but cancer? its not financially advantageous, or even possible for extended chronic care for cancer, especially glioblastoma (which can kill in a matter of months from diagnosis or onset of noticible symptoms)...so the ability to cure is the only profitable method in this case.

I lost my mother to glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) in 2001, six months after diagnosis so I am excited whenever early results look promising.

The main characteristic that makes GBM the most likely target for this EMF-based therapy is that it does not metastasize (spread distantly). Metastatic cancer will still be a problem even if this therapy pans out, but for precancerous lesions and stages 1-3, something like this that actually works in humans can be useful.

Current treatments for GBM are not so profitable because it is (1) a very rare disease and (2) an extremely difficult disease to treat. To date, surgical resection is the best treatment. However, a breakthrough with something like this turning out to be highly effective will be somewhat profitable, at least for the marketer for the lifetime of the patent. So, we will likely see this come through the pipeline, if it actually works. Efficacy in humans is a giant leap from in vitro and in vivo animal studies, however. The strength of evidence from one solid clinical trial is equivalent to years of basic lab science because we cannot experiment on human subjects, and mice are not little, fury people. Still, we may remain hopeful.

Thanks for the report!
