Database Programs - March 27, 2007, 06:38 PM

All you people have different types of jobs but obviously most of you work on or with a computer for a living considering the busiest time of this site is during peak M-F work hours.

My question is this....for those that use database programs such as Access or even Excel. Is there other programs out there that you think are user friendly such as importing data from other programs? Excuse me but I am not super computer literate. I am bascially looking for something that could handle market trends within a particular business, finances, etc. Something that I could set up myself using the variables I want. I have only used Access in the past and that was years ago so I wondering if there is some better out now....

Any suggestions/help would truly truly helpful.

Thanks gang!

Better...sure. But I doubt you have the cash for them.

Access is simple, well supported, easy to find folks who are good in it, and cheap. I still use it on projects for simple data processing, ingestion, etc....on smaller data sets.

I think it really depends on what you are trying to put in a database. Excel is awesome, but can be tiresome trying to invent and create a templete format you wish to use for your database. There are a lot of template type programs available that use Excel as their format. You need to google datebase software that is specific to your job.

Thanks for replying and your right I would not be the one purchasing the software.

So let me say this money is no object so what are the better ones to use.

Ab Initio is great for data ingestion. But a decent license is more than the price of a townhouse. I use it at work. $5K just for the developers workstation software, then you have to license the main system on a server...and that cost is dependant on the server CPU's, etc. Then you need to be trained in it's use. Not cheap....like I said.

Personally...I used Access to initially set up a production system. It's useful...really.

Otherwise Guzz is right. You can google open source ETL tools. (Extract, Translate, and Load) There are a few free ones out there.

Ahh. You arent really looking for a DATABASE exactly. You are looking more along the lines of Business Management Software. That program looks good. In my industry (flooring) they make several Business management Programs specifically designed to manage my type of business. Have you looked in any trade magazines your company might have or are available to your industry?

Thanks again MudDawg.

I like Access but I think for what the software will be doing it might get a bit extensive in time and will eventually need all the bells and whistles you said above...especially when employees can work from home.

If your company is buying look into SOL server: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/default.mspx

Pretty easy to use and set up. Their is plenty of support for it. Easy to import Excell and csv files.

Oracle is bad but a little more user intensive, took me a while to understand it:

Um...SQL Server is from Microsoft. Basically it's the upgrade path when a small local database isn't going to be sufficient to meet your needs. It's a great middle tier database server.

Oracle is more expensive and more geared towards upper end solutions.

Definately do some searching on google. You'd be amazed at what kinds of niche products are out there.

While I am a Microsoft Whore... My 1st choice is SQL Server... However, if costs are an issue - check out mysql - http://www.mysql.com/

MySQL AB makes MySQL Server available as free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL), check it out..
