DC Comics Decides To Amp Up The Sex Level To Attract New Readers - September 23, 2011, 01:42 PM

The day before Red Hood And The Outlaws #1 went to press, I understand there was a meeting at DC Comics, in which the Starfire issue came up. And someone involved has been in touch;

“Yes, there were a lot of people there, it had become quite the conversation piece. There was a lot of discussion about Kory and her sexuality the day before this issue went to press.”

“There were a handful of staff, mostly other women, who believed the writer was trying to equate being a strong woman with being, frankly, a slut. No one said that the writer was misogynistic, just that perhaps he was writing from a male perspective. It was firmly suggested to him that he could accentuate the character’s past as a sex slave. And that this might be an explanation for her sexuality, that she was acting out in her new life.”

“However, we were told he was adamant that Kory not be portrayed as a victim. The argument was made that if she was acting out sexually because of her past it mind that she mentally never left the prison planet.”

“In the end a compromise was struck and the sentence “I am a woman” [originally placed at the top of the third panel above] was lost.”

While the title has been positively received by most comic book fans, some reviewers haven't been kind to Judd Winick's first issue of Catwoman. It seems that a few of them weren't best pleased with her portrayal (the last couple of pages from the comic below may give you an idea of what's bothered them so much) and Newsarama reached out to the writer to get his take on this.

This is a Catwoman for 2011, and my approach to her character and actions reflect someone who lives in our times. And wears a cat suit. And steals. It’s a tale that is part crime story, part mystery and part romance. In that, you will find action, suspense and passion. Each of those qualities, at times, play to their extremes. Catwoman is a character with a rich comic book history, and my hope is that readers will continue to join us as the adventure continues.

yeah...
I think its only becoming a big deal because its on the mainstreem books and main characters.

I use to get all the artist owned books alwo. (Have thoughsands of comics from 1984-2004).... I still want to buy but they cost too damn much now.

At my peak I was spending close to $200 a month on books. Way over 20 titles including Wizard , Penthouse Comics, Heavey Metal and Hero mag.

SHit batman alone had about 5-7 titles, and Xmen had about the same plus the off shoot boks and speacial stories books.

Comics have always been riddled with sex. I still have tons of old cards, holograms, and comics that to the unknowing eye could resemble pron.

What Kaneda and Von said.......they are playing catch up and the only reason this is news is because it is one of the BIG TWO in comics. Anyone that thinks there has not been sex in comics is not paying attention. Last time I checked none of the women were unattractive and rocking loose fitting outfits.

This will blow over soon enough.
