Dealer/Car Suggestions for Cash for Clunkers? - August 5, 2009, 11:29 AM

One of my cars is a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited that is starting to fall apart. It is very much eligible for the Cash For Clunkers program and I am considering doing this.

Anyone have any experice with it? Dealership or Car suggestions?

Thanks!

The fact that they ran out of money is indicative of how successful the program has been. Clearly, it's moving a lot of new cars off the lots in a very short period of time. It might be one of the most effective stimulus programs ever conceived in that sense.

Hey Thanks! I guess, do all dealerships participate? Also, is it automatically $4500 or $3500 as long as your car qualifies, or does the dealership need to inspect and upraise etc...?

Not all dealerships are participating. Some were and now are not cause of being unsure the govt will give them the money back. and on the dollar amount most i have seen are 4500. but it all depends on some worksheet that the dealerships have that the govt has given them. some type of calculation based on year mileage etc. if your thinking of doing it you might wanna get on it today. I believe our stores arent doing it any longer but some might. hope this helps

As far as I know most dealerships use this program, you can call and ask.

The new vehicle must get at minimum 18+ MPG.

Id find a car you like, determine its value based on what people have been paying, and then negotiate a price before you mention to the dealer the cash for clunkers program, once you are satisfied with the price bring up the program and your vehicle. If they bring up a trade in or the program tell them you'd like to focus on the car you are buying only right now.

The program is federally funded so it takes $0 out of the pockets of the dealer.

the 1996 v8 looks to be not eligible

cars.gov

edmunds.com for a list of eligible cars http://www.edmunds.com/cash-for-clun...-vehicles.html

the 1997 v8 is eligible though

It takes nothing for the dealership to process but i will tell you that dealerships or at least ours are having customers sign a form saying if your car gets rejected by the govt for this program then you will be responsible to pay. but I know some dealerships have in fact stop doing it.

Oneway: I'm almost certain 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 is eligible. It meets all the guidelines. fueleconomy.gov

Newgirlie: Thanks for the info. I am definitely getting on it today...maybe go to dealeships this weekend.

Zx6Rfool: Thanks for the advice of not bringing it up first! I never thought of that.

Do not mention anything about this program to the dealer. Negotiate a final price FIRST. They have been jacking up the prices for people doing this trade-in.
