Dell or HP? - August 7, 2009, 01:31 PM

My parents want a new laptop, so i have spec'd out two laptops for them:

An HP Pavillion dv6t and a Dell inspiron 13.

Based on the requirements set forth by the folks and price max, these two are what Ive narrowed it down to.

Being an IT nerd, ive had to support the whole range of machines. For the past 5 years, my office has gotten Dell's due to the gov't discount. As of late it seems the Dell's have gone in the shitter, while HP seems to be building decent affordable machines.

I am pretty sure I am going with the HP, but wanted other techie nerds to weigh in on the two. Please dont recommend other manufact or other models, these two are it.

Just want to know if you are in agreement that dell has gone to shit as of late and HP is the better choice.

HP FTW.....Dell is just doing a mass production thing as it seems there more about quantity versus quality in my opinion....And because of that they have more warranty work done to their laptops than any other I have worked with. IMO

Dell.

Hate HP/Compaq. Worked on them for a couple years and it was a PITA reformatting, installing hardware, etc. That was a few years ago, so maybe things have changed recently.

I was just recently talking to a computer contractor I know and with a few others. I think HP would be the better choice but Dell has better support. If you are going to be their support I would say HP.
If not, Dell. I have used all Dell for the past 10 years and I really don't seem to have any problems with them. The HP servers I have used are top notch.

That has been my experience. For 3 years in a row we have gotten a batch of 10 to 15 laptops. Every year, at least 5 of them had to go back right away due to all kinds of issues. The rest, i swear every few months 2 or 3 of them go back for replacement.

We have about 10 HP's. Only had to replace bad Hard drives, but that is the norm....

Yep, I hope they change to Segate hard drives next year instead of the the western digifail they are currently using for their desktops...

I didn't even see the specs... HP wins... mainly because Dell automatically loses.. I had so much trouble, stress and hard time buying 3 netbooks from them, than i will never buy or recommend a dell to anyone... They could have made me happy by simply including the $2 part that I paid $25 for... but no, instead I got to have hours of time on hold and talking to semi-rude indian folk... and no part, even after they finally agreed to send it.

this will bite them in the ass when I'm speccing parts for my agency's video recording systems. That $2 part will cost them millions in lost sales of servers and drives.

HP has been cranking out some nice laptops lately.

I think this one is a no-brainer though. You've got a dual core vs a core 2 duo. They're at basically the same clock speeds, but the core 2 duo has twice the level 2 cache. Also, the "duo" processors have both cores on a single die. Less heat and more power savings.

Typically the dual core processors are cheaper than the "premium" duo line, but if you can get a duo for the price of a dual core, there's no reason to get the dual core.

With the HP you get the next generation graphics accelerator. The chip in the Dell is circa 2007. The X4500 HD is DirectX 10 compatible, more shaders, and more clock speed.

EDIT: Supposedly the x3100 in the Dell is DX10 compatible with a driver update.. the 4500 will still outperform it.

This thing isn't going to play Crysis (if your parents are in to that sort of thing) but it will do everything better than the Dell, for less money.

You've got a 6 cell battery over a 4 cell.

You've got a 16 inch screen over a 13.3

Everything else is a wash.

I definitely knew the processor and video was older. screen size were not as much an importance b/c most the time it will be plugged into a bigger flat screen monitor. Price wise, the HP came out on top b/c of specs, but wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one that thought Dell in general has gone to poop.

Thanks for reaffirming what I already knew.
