Deviated septums!! - May 19, 2009, 10:20 PM

Ive always had the deviated septum. Just always breathed through my mouth. Snoring doesnt bother me. And this is my last summer break, so i figure its good timing to get it done and not have to worry about recovering fast.

Anyone had it fixed and recommend a doctor in the area? How it went? How fast you recovered? Will there be a noticeable scar?

I had the surgery done about 15 years ago -- totally worth it. I always had suffered from sinus infections and since the surgery, I've not had one.

Can't recommend a doctor - mine retired.

I broke my nose 3 times and they said I had ashtma. Then realized it was deviated septum. Not gonna lie, it sucked recovering. Nose bleeding constantly, changing nasty gauze out your nose, but it's well worth it. No scarring except inside my nose which you can't see anyways. While they were in there went ahead and fixed my "bump"
a little bit, got the Greek nose from my mom. Doctors name was Dr. Yii or Yee if I recall right, got mine done by him at SHady Grove Hospital in Gaithersburg, MD. You won't breathe right for a while afterwards because theres constnatly gauze in there to catch the bleeding but its well worth it.

I got mine done back in 03 by a ENT Specialist in Southern MD Hospital..sorry cant remember his name. Kept me over nite and nose was packed for a couple of days. Removed packing and had sum type of splint inside for a few more days. Took a minute to recover but is well worth it. I broke my nose in a car accident in 3 places in the early 90's. Back then they offered no anasthsia (spelling?)...said they would break my nose with something like a tuning fork to correct the problem......which made me make up my mind to say FUK that...I'll be alright. Over the years snoring got worse so I decided to get it done....glad technology progressed over the years. BTW.....I was high as a kite when they kept me overnight....had a brudda on morphine by the push of a button...lmao!

My wife had it done a few years ago.. she was miserable for 2-3 days. It was an improvement for her - but i think over time the scar tissue can build up and you have to have it done again..? Overall she wouldnt do it again. But her threshold for pain/discomfort could be lower than others. (it's typically pretty high)

Dr Michael Morris in Frederick Md. He did my second surgery and was recommended to my by several friends. You read it right, I had it done twice and was well worth it.

How can we be sure this is just not an excuse for a nose job?

I have a pretty bad deviated septum, can barely breathe through my right nostril. But I don't snore and just am used to breathing through my mouth. I don't think I'm going to get it fixed though... watch me fix it and then start snoring.

Well worth it. I had the openings to my sinuses enlarged as well. Haven't had a sinus infection since. Recovery not that bad at all. One day on the couch and I was shoveling snow the following day.

You will have some crazy boogs for a few weeks but those are more fun then anything. Looks like a scene from Total Recall.

My roommate in college had it done...Well worth it in my opinion. She was a much happier person afterwards. Her mood became alot more friendlier because she wasnt suffering from infections, she wasnt kept awake by snoring nor keeping us awake with it either. It made her feel better overall and not one single bit of scarring.

Defintaly your decision to make but if your gains outweigh your risks i would go for it. But if you risks outweighs YOU gains(not others) then its not worth your time!

Doesn't seem like too much risk. Scar tissue you can't even see because its in your nose, unless you like looking up your nose often. Even then its just red, nothing too disgusting or disturbing. Rob if your insurance covers it by all means you should get it. Its like breathing through a garden hose and then taking the hose away, world of difference.

little worried about the anesthesia - ive never been under a knife, what if i dont wake up?? i know im proly a little paranoid

Could insurance possibly cover this operation? I have blue cross blue shield under my parents,, i always just assumed they wouldnt cover it. That would be sweet if they did!

If you don't wake up you just go to heaven or hell, pretty simple; or you won't know and you body will decay. Just make sure to confess your love to that girl beforehand.

You mouth breathers!! Probably chew with your mouth open as well...

Best friend had the surgery and swears by it. Had tons of sinus infections before and now none. They didn't pack her nose after the surgery but she did talk abotu some ridiculously long boogers.
