Digital Camera Advice - December 15, 2009, 04:43 PM

I need something that is going to be able to deal with extreme temps in both directions, and some dirt. Any advice on a good, reasonably priced ($200ish or less) digital camera? Don't need super quality, more concerned about survivability than anything.

I'm looking at these couple right now...

Don't know a lot about cameras, so any advice would be great.

The Sony blows.

The SX120 is good, the other canon is pretty entry level.

What's bad about the Sony?

It takes horrible pictures. I bought that as a gift for a friend not too long ago, the picture are decent but they still suck.

For point-and-shoot, it's really tough to beat the Nikon Coolpix cameras. These things are awesome and take amazingly good photos and offer a really nice form factor. Last year I gave a Coolpix and a Samsung equivalent as gifts, and the Samsung ended up sucking. It doesn't even work anymore.

The problem with Sony is that they have their own, proprietary flash memory, among other things. Stick with the camera folks--Nikon, Olympus, or Canon--not these clowns who do everything and nothing (with exceptions) superbly well like Sony and Samsung. Again, I have been really impressed with Nikon.

My advice is stay away from Sony. Canon is the way to go. Just picked up a 12.1 and couldn't be any happier.

I would go with Canon or Nikon, but thats personal preference. Youre probably going to want something that can also do video so you dont have to carry around a separate video camera. One thing to remember is that none of these cameras are really that great in low or medium light.

Good point on the video bit. Hrmmm. More research I guess.

100% spot on. Also, Fuji and Pentax. for P&S Cameras, I usually go Canon and my DSLR is Nikon - you can't go wrong with either though.

If you weren't limited to $200, I'd say get a Canon S90. I believe someone listed an SD1200, that's also a great camera.

Here is a picture I took at a recent Gwar concert in low light about 80 feet away from the stage. Its also got a 12x zoom. Its the sx200 Canon camera.

That's pretty clear! Does the SX200 do decent video?
