Ding Dong Ditch. - August 5, 2009, 09:36 AM

Anyone ever had a problem with kids ringing their doorbell late at night and running away? It's been going on for several months now. Usually once a week almost always between 10-11pm. I've disabled the doorbell at night but they just knock instead.

The 1st time they did it, i walked out and incidentally found where they were hiding and chased them up the street. If i hadn't been barefoot i prob would have caught one of them. Since then they don't seem to hide in the same place.

At 1st it was just annoying, but it's now VERY aggravating. When they do it my dog goes BALLISTIC. The last time they hit us twice - at 10:30ish and 11ish. After the second time i put my clothes on, went out the basement door with a maglight. Walked around the neighborhood to see if i noticed any kids roaming about but i didnt see any.

At this point i've ordered IP cameras and gonna set it up to discover who it is. My neighbors have kids varying from 14-18 and are involved with the community so if it is a local kid from our area there's a very good chance they will recognize him. Another option is to take a SS of the video, enlarge it and post it around the area asking if people have seen this kid, and if they have i'd like to speak to his parents.

Obviously, if i "catch" one of them i can't physically slap them around without fear of litigation. Can i detain them? My other idea is to borrow some night vision goggles and stalk them to w/e they go and call the cops. But i'd prob have to have video of them doing it on different nights to warrant harassment.

I'd prefer not to get the cops involved, but i'm willing to do what it takes to get them to stop.

I'd assume shooting them even with a paint gun could result in possible litigation. Altho i did think about getting a super soaker. Maybe fill it with some urine.

get yourself some triple action mace. stakeout by the door. when they come by, unleash the fury.

Accuse them of trespassing, disturbance of peace and inciting violence when the shit hits the fan. After it all blows over, they will never come near your house again.

I like the strobe light idea....

but seriously...why would you even be answering your door at 10:30/11AM if you weren't expecting anybody or had phone calls ahead of time???

They only reason they keep coming back is b/c you chased them up the street like an ass. If I was a kid I'd ring you're door bell everynight in hopes that you would chase again..lol.

You probably want to check out youtube for Ding Dong Ditch or whatever it's called now. It's very possible you're the crazy old man mumbling and grumbling chasing a group of kids around.

What do you value more? Life or Image?

I like the idea of taking their picture (or video) and posting all over the neighborhood.
How about installing a zapper on the doorbell so when they touch it, it zaps them? Tee hee.

Tie your dog to the front porch at night?

You have to beat them at their own game somehow... whether its from hiding in the bushes at night with your goggles on or setting up a trip line that you pull when they are running away...
