Question Do you Twitter? - March 23, 2009, 09:39 AM

This Twitter thing is all over the news channels and seems to be the rage.

I signed up, but I am just not sure i understand its coolness?

Do you Twitter? If so what are you doing with it that makes it different than any other thing?

I must just be having a mental block, because it's usefulness just isn't clicking for me.

I am GrumpyGuzz if you need to know this for any reason I am going to try to figure it all out this week a little bit at a time.

I do not twitter, nor do I plan on ever signing up. Sometimes I wish I lived in simpler times.

I was wondering the same thing. Over the past 1 -1 1/2 months I've heard about it at least once a day. I thought it was just something that allowed you to update your status on multiple social networking sites; but now the traffic girl on ch 9 is using it to tell you the traffic updates.

Something interesting I heard the other day: Twitter doesn't sell ads or anything, but they worth over $35 Million due to donations from misc. companies.

I've never even signed up for it, but isn't it basically just a short status message for what you're up to at the time?

if that's the case, not to offend those who are on it, but seriously? who cares? I can't think of one person who would want to know what I'm up to all the damn time.. Even my mom wouldn't read it.

isn't it basically just like the status line on IM, or Gtalk, or facebook, or myspace, or any other freaking social site? This just seems like stalker fuel and nothing more.

I'm on. I twitter. I have issues with it as a personal micro blogging tool vs communication tool vs business tool.

It and Facebook's status update seem to be in parallel with each other.

Personally, I use TweetDeck to follow Twitter and Facebook at the same time. My second monitor is just full of "updates" all day long.

They both accomplish the same tasks, but people say that Twitter is more for "conversations". But I know I've had a nice string of Facebook comments on an update happen more than once.

It's all about where your audience exists. And of course twitter has expanding capabilities with using hashtags (#+keywords) to reach a further audience.

I just signed up like a week ago, because I kept seeing FOX5 having stuff on there and mentioned my health insurance co. and how they get to the bottom of the issue quicker through twitter than by calling so I signed up but now I can't find anyone... IDK how to use it

I always thought of it as a good way to let other riders know where you are headed, maybe for a meetup etc. Its a social tool that you essentially have to have others linked up with to work.

You could easily start a #dcsportbikes tag and whenever you go out, twitter with that tag in the line. If everyone subscribed to that tag, then you'd always know where people were going. Easy to check on a phone. Easy to update. Everyone gets it.

Our local blog, hburgnews.com, has a twitter hashtag like I was talking about that is posted to right side bar. You can easily jump on the site and see what people have posted to it, be it warnings about traffic, where your going, what new bike you just saw, what hot girl just left your butt in the dust, etc.

It's a fairly useful tool for a community such as dcsb.

We also have a group Flickr pool which anyone can post to and join. DCSB needs one of those too. It's not really easy to load pictures to DCSB and also you would take a huge load off of the server for posting/hosting photos.
