Do you "Yard Sale"? - August 18, 2009, 10:32 AM

I don't know if it is the area where I live as well as the area I work in (Basically the Shenandoah Valley to Western Loudoun County), but it seems every Friday & Saturday lately the yard sales are everywhere. I mean these things are HUGE and in full force. Bis ass tables with what seems to be peoples whole lives on them and giant signs advertising it. I see people as early as 7AM on Friday morning om my way to work just packing peoples yards checking out all the goods for sale. I have even had to veer to miss cars that slam on their breaks not to miss one. I mean people in Escalades and Mercedes. Not people that look down on their luck necessarily. Who are these people? I understand the economy is whacky, but I am still stunned at all this. I mean I admit I never stop, but what I can see from a distance, a lot of this stuff really looks like junk. I mean seriously, a 20 year old lamp with no shade? Big Wheels that are faded with broken petals. I admit I just don't understand the huge surge in these things. So fess up...are you one of these people? Are you a yard sale-a-holic? Spill it...whats the attraction?

I see them everywhere too. People doing like 5 mph to scope the stuff. I don't do it.
But then I watch Antiques Road Show, people bring stuff in they bought from a yard sale for like 2 bucks, and then get appraisals in the thousands of dollars!! Or the HGTV shows that the hosts will go buy stuff or take it from the curb, fix it up and wow!

But who's gonna buy it for thousands of dollars?

Bet you 10:1 they are making payments and upside down in those vehicles...it is cheaper to make payments than to sell and have to pay the note.

I don't go to them often but occasionally. You'd be amazed at what you will find, but really is nothing more than to kill time.

wife and I never yard saled until this summer. With the baby coming soon, we were browsing for toys, books, and other baby stuff. Most the time the items are still pretty new b/c the kid outgrows the stuff so quickly.

I did it in college for furniture. But we dont go too nutso.

I hardly ever stop for yard sales, but I did have a yard sale earlier this month. Hubby & I cleaned out the attic.......lets just say we were holding on to things for years and finally let them go.......everything we sold was in great condition and we made $620. We still had things left over that didn't sell so we donated them. There was no way we were going to sit outside in the heat again to try to get rid of everything. It was alot of work but well worth the outcome.

another man's trash is another man's treasure

i don't see a problem with yard sales, flea markets, etc etc. Rich or poor...if i can get the samething or something similar for cheap..why the hell not...so what it's missing a knob or whatever else that prevents snub noses from buying/looking - because of your pride, I just saved big - gratis.

like the TV i got for free off . net...so what it's not a flat panel hang from the wall or whatever else...it' still a big ass screen, it's still 1080 HDMI and works awesomely to this day

My mom loves going to yard sales and antique stores, guess its a country-person thing? Personally I'll sell my jasnk on CL or ebay, but yard sales are also good places to get things to sell on ebay. I bought some speakers for JBL speakers at a yard sale for $2.00 and sold them on ebay for $70. My neighbor has a yard sale every friggin weekend and theres always a billion of them in Poolesville and out towards Frederick every weekend.

My parents do it. My sister does it. Everybody loves getting 'a deal', even when it's unnecessary junk that will just clutter your house.

For me, Saturday and Sunday is for riding, etc.
