Droid 2 - August 13, 2010, 02:25 PM

Anybody else get one?

As anybody who had seen my previous phone knows, it was a mostly broken flip phone circa 1999. Picked up the Droid 2 yesterday. So far I like it a lot and haven't really found anything to complain about. I'm still playing and figuring out all the things it can do though. The only trouble I've had is trying to get Bluetooth to connect to my laptop correctly and I'm pretty sure that's user error.

A co-worker pointed out that it has Flash 10.1. So I went to Kongregate and no shit, I can play flash games right on the phone. Pretty slick!

Intrested to know why you didn't go with Droid X? Did you need a physical keyboard?

Also I wish you had exp with android 2.1 so you could comment on 2.2 better....I'm still waiting for the update that was supposed to come in begin of Aug....now it's sept.

Yeah I can't speak on 2.2 vs 2.1

I can say some of the really cool things I like about the phone I've learned are Froyo/2.2 specific. Like the google voice actions and the full version flash player. It also doesn't have the moto blur skin and I think that's a plus.

I always liked the form factor of the original Droid and the physical keyboard because the size is large enough to use for web browsing and whatnot, without being too large as to become cumbersome. Personally I think the Evo4g and the X crossed that threshold in to oversized.

The other aspect I like of the physical keyboard is that none of the screen real estate is taken up by keyboard. It does have a touch keyboard too if you want to use it (which is especially awesome sideways as it's slightly watered down so the keys are nice and big and spaced out), and I do often because it's faster. Sometimes I also need to move from field to field and that's easier to accomplish for me and my fat fingers on the physical keyboard. Really it's just versatility, I use all 3 keyboard depending on what I'm doing. With that flexibility I always have what I want.

I don't plan on doing any serious video or pictures with it so I don't care about 8megapixel vs 5 or HD video vs DVD quality.

Battery life is much better as well. I kept finding pitfalls with all the flavors of droid and the iphone4. This is the phone I've been waiting for

Droid 2 looks like a great phone. I like the Droid X more than I did my Droid 1.

I thought I would need the keyboard....nope not needed IMO.

It really isn't with the x. I nearly got one but at the last minute decided it was too large for me. That's totally a personal preferance though and no slight on the phone at all.

There are lots of people complaining about the droid2 not being bigger than the droid1 too. Different strokes.

I don't know how much this would affect Google's Android OS, but I'm sure if Oracle has anything to say about it, the OS could be battered and torn at least a little:

Kind of a dick move by Oracle, seeing that Java has been open for some time. Guess new management isn't taking any chances.

Okay....so I've had a Droid X since July 20th and I went and toyed with Droid 2 about 45 mins ago...

THERE IS NO WAY...THAT I CAN DOWNGRADE TO THAT SCREEN...EVER. I hope the large screen is here to stay for a lot of phones b/c it was VERY cramped using that smaller screen on the droid 2. The Froyo OS was NICE...flash player NICE (the large screen on DX will do it justice more so than the D2)...270 degree rotation NICE....

I'm not looking forward to "re learning" the navigation on the home screens with 2.2 now that I'm quite familiar with the DX 2.1...but I want the 2.2 so such is life.

I will say that with the Swype text input...you DON'T need a physical keyboard...ever again. I was bummed out about the HDMI port on the DX that it's not open and ONLY works for pictures and video that were "taken" on the phone. I haven't tried the blockbuster app (maybe next time I hop on a plane or something...???)

Anyways I'm very happy with my new Droid X phone...that is until the next phone that comes out that does this that or the other.

Also if you have a Droid 1...KEEP IT. Unless you want to upgrade to a DX no point in getting teh D2.
