E-ZPass Flex - August 21, 2013, 02:32 PM

Has anyone heard of this before? I just had to update my credit card and I noticed this. I think it's for the 495 hot lanes. It says if you are driving on 495 and have more than 3 people, you can drive for free. With this pass, you can turn on the Flex setting and you won't be charged. So my question is how would anyone know if you have three people or not?

When you zip by the police they have some sort of device that detects whether you have the "flex" pass. And the cop then does a visual check to make sure there are three occupants.

Have you noticed this or is this a theory? Seems like this would be harder to enforce than HOV violations because in the HOV lanes, they know you are doing something wrong if you only have one person in the car, as with this, they would have to get some confirmation that you have the Flex thing turned on in addition. Seems like you would be long gone before they put those two things together. Unless they have some camera that can do person detection and know.

I have one. This is how it is explained on the 495express website.

2 things happen. IF you have it on, it lets the state assigned trooper know. The trooper also has in his vehicle an auditory notification that flex is enabled. Then he/she does a visual inspection.

I have seen it in action.

How do you enforce the lanes?
Virginia State Police enforces the lanes with the help of technology.
If you don’t have an E-ZPass, roadside equipment will capture an image of your license plate and we will send you an invoice in the mail requesting payment of your toll and an administrative fee.
If you are carpooling, equipment on the side of the road will alert state police that you have identified yourself as HOV-3 through your E-ZPass Flex. State police then do a visual check to make sure you indeed have three people in the car.

Only real problem is that there arnt many folks using it. So the state trooper assigned gets bored and writes lots of speeding tickets. Lol
