The effects of driving while tired - May 6, 2009, 02:21 AM

For all the visual learners, the attached pics are representative of a discussion in another thread from a few weeks ago about drinking and driving, which turned into a discussion on fatigued driving.

The truck is an F250. My girlfriend's brother's best friend was driving to NC to go fishing when he fell asleep at the wheel at around 2 a.m. and apperently hit the gas as he dozed off. From how I understand it, there was a sharp turn in the road that he missed (because he was asleep) and the truck ended up rolling 7 times. He was in a coma for a little while, but is now awake with a few broken bones, but not much else wrong. He wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was ejected, which probably saved his life. Drive safe people.

Can you fall asleep while riding a bike? In a car, you're snuggled in and have temperature control.

I guess I haven't heard of a driver doing it.. but lots of passengers have passed out while movin

in 1994, I had a street sweeper truck.. on the highway.. driver fell asleep and drifted into me... I was in a '77 FJ40 Land Cruiser.. rolled 5+ times down Highway 101 in california.

Woke up.. roof 1/3 gone.. no hood.. both rear wheel broken off (literally).. all windows broken.. my drivers seat, with me sitting in it.. was in the "back" of the truck.. my passenger had been asleep with no seat belt.

We both walked away.. with just a few bruises. crazy.

Yes you can fall asleep while riding. You get to a point that your body just says "time to sleep" and it doesnt mater what you try to do to stay awake. I use to drive across country all the time for work. We would work for weeks straight with out much sleep than climb behind the wheel of a 80,000 lbs truck and head west. The lines on the highway would start to do strange things and than you would start to see thing running along side the truck. I would chug a can of red bull or NOS just o get an hour more down the road and pull to the side of the road and pass out as soon as the truck was stopped. Over the road truck drivers do this day in and day out. It is very scary to hear some of the stories of hours spent on the road.

Up in Humboldt county.. in northern cal.. they all just do tons of meth (the truck drivers)

and the cigarette trick.. guys who don't even smoke.. will light a cig w/ no filter.. and hold it like an inch up from the base.. so when it finally burns down to their fingers.. it burns them to wake them up

Fun stuff!

Yeah, driving/sleeping=bad combo.

When I was a kid, this Minister/Preacher (can't remember which branch...... lol) fell asleep behind the wheel of his F-150, went straight when the road turned to the left, and ran smack in to a church. Not his church, mind you, a different one. Knocked the place 'o worhsip off the friggin foundation. Seriously, he ran in to another church. I can't make this stuff up people.
