Exclamation Effed up! Anybody ever have this happen? - September 30, 2009, 11:18 AM

The receptionist at my work said a Dave Harris was calling me about 'a personal matter.' She asked if I wanted her to get more info. Since I absolutely do not know a Dave Harris, I said, "you can do whatever, but he goes straight to my Voicemail." He left a message saying that he needed me to call him back at this 703 921 2250. On a whim, I googled the number and found this. I don't know of any debts that I am late on, so if he is a debt collector, he can go piss up a rope.

I posted my call here: http://www.callferret.com/703-921-2250.html

That is some eeiry messed up shit.

Yup, defintley collection agency. Don't answer the phone, block the numbers if you can. Watch out for your credit score, check it in a few weeks here https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp (the only REAL free credit check).

Some reading:

Whatever ya do don't tell them a damn thing. They're scam artists.

The easiest thing is to actually answer the call and let them know that they have the wrong number. I was getting a calls/messages from a collections agency earlier this year for some chick. I finally was able to answer the phone (I don't carry my cell during the day) and let them know that they had the wrong number.

I haven't heard from them since.

Been there done that to, doesnt always work. I've heard of people getting harassed about debts from previous homeowners, dead relatives, kids, etc.

Actually, answer/call back once. Find out what its about. Aside from that dont tell them anything, no address, no other phone #'s, nothing. The kind of debt collectors thats calling you are the kind that buy debts from other companies, like Gyms. So they want to get their investment back by harassing you. Whether the debt is real or fraudulent doesn't matter to them. There are laws as to how they can go about it.

Funny reading this thread I get a call from NCO Financial... think they are a collection agency. The keep calling me looking for someone with my same last name. I tell them not only do I not know him, he doesn't live here and they hang up abruptly... they call back roughly every two weeks. Bastards!!

I got something like that for a while, some guy skipped out on his car loan. Pissed me off, got almost daily calls. After like the 100 time of telling them that I am not that guy, and he does not live here, and never could have since this is a brand new home, I finally googled them and filed a formal complaint, mailed copies to both BBB and them, and never heard from them again. PITA.

You are getting horrible advice in this thread. You should ABSOLUTELY answer the phone and find out what they are trying to collect and resolve the matter. Sweeping it under the rug won't work and it may just make things difficult for you in the future.

About a year or two ago, I was hassled by a collection agency. The reason is because the Fascist State of Virginia apparently thought I owe them taxes from 5 years ago even though 5 years ago I filed taxes in PA. This was not true, but the VA still tried to collect - was unable to track me down even though you can Google my name for full contact info - and they eventually send it off to collections. I got the VA info from the collection agency, and then contacted VA to resolve it, and VA contacted collections to take me off.

My point is that whether it's valid or not, the dumbest thing you can do is ignore it.
