Employer Opening Mail - May 7, 2008, 03:08 PM

I got a piece of mail today and it was opened by my secretary

Needless to say I was a little heated to get a letter that was already open

It was work related but still

Am I wrong for being pissed?

Has this happened to anyone?

It just makes me think of how much mail I have not recieved because it was not work related, for example alumni info, professional registrations, etc.

My AA screens my mail for me to save me time. Don't be mad, just make sure he/she knows their boundaries and what you want done... especially when it comes to mail.

She is not a "secretary" she is an admin assistant. It's more PC to call her your assistant. Regardless, if she is your assistant, maybe you need to let her know what mail you want or don't want. Alot of admins will throw away junk mail their bosses get b/c their bosses don't want to weed through that crap. Also lots of admins do open mail to see what it is in case it it something they can handle w/o bothering their boss.

Kinda confused at the title of this thread, if she is your "secretary" then why would this be titled "Employer opening mail?"

You shouldn't be pissed, just nicely let her know you'd prefer to receive all mail that comes through to you, she doesn't need to sort any of it out.

Admin assistants are secretarys... all this PC non-gender specific crap makes me puke in my mouth. It's derrived from the word Secretarius, an individual overseeing or attending to the business of a superior. Which is why we don't have AA of State, or EA of the Treasury.

I'm confused, is she your assistant or your employer, ie boss?

With electronic mail, anything sent to your company address is property of the company. If you don't want someone else to see it, you don't use company addresses, systems or resources. Postal mail with your company's address that's delivered could legally be considered property of the company.

Not to say this is the case in your situation but is something to consider.

When calling someone your secretary as in your admin assistant, it has become a demeaning way to address someone. Not sure why, but I cringe when someone is complaining and they say "my secretary". Sorry maybe I have a soft spot for that position since I was an admin for many many years and had to deal with some pretty crappy situations soley based on the position.

Secretary does carry the conotation of inferiority, usually assigned to women. The term is accurate to describe her position - no matter who doesn't like it. Strangely, in roman times there were rarely, if ever, female secretarys.

Get over it. I call mine an AA because it's shorter than typing Secretary. There's much bigger problems in the world than whether you're called an Administrative Assistant or Secretary. If titles are that important to you, maybe you should strive harder to get out of that kind of a position anyway.

If it's your secretary, just tell her to do otherwise.

if it's your employer doing it and you cant stop it, just have your stuff sent to your home adress...

My mail gets opened, inspected and irradiated (microwaved) before I ever even see it. any CD's I get, or anything plasticky such as packet bindings, clear coversheets, eve some types of color ink get melted into a glob... If it's adressed to my work adress, they have the right.

If she really is your secretary, she should do what you tell her. I couldn't care less if my assistant opened my stuff..saves me the time. I value her b/c I'm really bad about checking my mailbox. She opens everything and draws to my attention what has to be handled immediately. That being said, she and I are also friends so there is a trust level.

P.S. You should send porn to your home address. Then you have nothing to worry about.

May want to submit change of address on anything you don't want opened.

A lot of folks don't realize what is company property though. If your co's IT is well equipped, they could even read what you say in here, even pm. If you're using their computer...anything you do they have a right to...email, IM, etc. Even personal accounts are not always private.

Send the porn to my house. I'll "screen" it for you and let you know if its worth addressing. You can even call me your secretary. I dont mind.
