Ok, so it bothered me in the "are you smarter than a 5th grader poll".

So I don't consider myself racist, but I got a problem with how schools and the general system of things go unchecked in this country. PWC specifically is beginning to show signs of this.

Gidget, you are a teacher in PWC. Maybe you can give some insight too.

I guess my rant is how ESOL students are treated in comparison to English speaking students.

Why would ESL students be treated any differently outside of taking an additional ESL class to better their english skills?

Be happy that they're taking the time to learn English and stop trying to hold the kids down. There's plenty who don't give a flying left monkey's testicle.

I'll tell you the people who need the 'special treatment' are the drive thru people. It's not my fault you hate your job or that you don't speak english!!! I want my order the way I ordered it!!!!!!!!! And I'm tired of the looks I get when I ask for more hot sauce. I'm tired of saying I want that with a coke 5 times. YES LARGE!! Fauk.

Ok at my sons elementry school there were about 12 kids that had zero english skills. They were all treated differently as in they did not have to learn english, if they got in trouble they had zero punishment and they didn't have to score on the Sol's test as high! I know this cause I was one of the 6 parents who complaned about the special treatment they got. I understand they came here and need to adjust, but the system did not try to make them adjust they just kept saying they don't understand so lets just let them slide! This will only make it more difficult for those kids when they get older. How does that help them out? If kids goto our schools we need to make sure they do understand and can be a productive person in our society.

Thanks dodge. It is getting to the point that it is frustrating. How do you tell your child that they need to study harder when <insert name> doesn't even have to pass it to go onto the next grade?

The thing to do is to make English the official language and drop this BS requirement to offer crap in other languages.
Do you know how much time is wasted on trying to explain something simple to someone who doesn't speak the language. Everyone else has to suffer.

I agree. If I moved to another country, I should be expected to speak their language.

Last night at Quiznos was SO frustrating b/c I couldn't understand the woman and she couldn't understand me. It took 15 minutes to get a sandwich and I was the only one in there. Being in HR, I wouldn't dream of hiring someone that could not communicate w/clients and other employees. It blows my damn mind.

I agree with Matt...I think we should do everything in our power to ensure that all kids get the correct amount of education in this country. Yes, we speak English in this country, but if both parents don't speak the language, the child has to fend for him/herself. And the best way to do that is learning it in school. My parents always taught me one thing: "Take care of your own business, and don't worry about others." Some kids are going to cheat to get good grades. I never did. Some kids are going to get pushed through even though they shouldn't. All I need to do is focus on my own schoolwork, get good grades, and good things will happen. Plain and simple.

You have a right to your frustrations and your opinions, however I believe that everyone came to this country for a good reason... trying to better their job situation, life situation, etc...whatever the case may be- they (immigrants) came here in hopes of something. Where I agree that English should be the language of choice, I also believe that we built this country off of the foreign people that CAME to this country. Not everyone spoke English when they first arrived!

BS in offering what crap in other languages? You mean on the phone options and stuff?

What do you say to your kid about working harder? You say don't worry about the other kids in the class. Why should they be worried about what the other kid is doing? This is what you are supposed to do to better your education in hopes of getting into a good college, should that be there route. Yes, everyone should be held the same standards... I agree. But it is what it is until they figure out something else to better the situation.

What would YOU do to try and be fair and equal to all in this country? What types of programs would you make people take, who do not speak English? How would you get them to do it?

Wow. Just..................wow.

K but when the teacher has to slow down my sons learning cause someone can't understand it does effect his education. My son was having no homework for weeks cause the teacher kept having to go over and over the same material cause a certain group did not understand and therefore he was behind the grade! This has since stopped now that he is in middle school but we had to do extra work over the summer cause his teacher did not get to all the material he needed for the next grade. We should not DUMB DOWN school for those that don't understand. We as a society need to realize that when people from other countries move here with lower schooling standerds we should not just throw them in with the rest of the kids until they understand and are caught up to the correct levels of thier grade. When my son had math problems he took extra classes but these kids were not required to take extra classes to help them catch up. There has to be a better way than what we have now but until people stand up and say this is not right our government will continue to do what they are doing.

Ok I thought I did but I will go into more detail. They should have a seperate curriculum that will help in the transtion to our grade levels. Yes this will cost more and raise taxes but it will help our society as a whole. And yes this is were all illegals, no matter were they come from, should be helped to become citizens so as to pay taxes to futher thier kids and thier own education. If this doen't help let me know and I can go into futher detail but I don't have the time right now.
