ESPN coverage of Monday night blew donkey balls - September 13, 2006, 08:17 AM

Was it just me or did anyone else get irritated with the production of the monday night game?

Maybe im just getting old and bitter..

In the beginning of the game when the skins player was hurt on the first play, the guys in the booth actually said.."not sure what to say here"

One time a blank template appeared on the screen instead of the player pic and stats. I laughed b/c it said "picture goes here" "player name goes here", "player stats go here"

The commentators sucked!!! It was cool for jamie fox to be in the booth, but not for 20 minutes..

when they showed replays, they forgot to mute the original sound, so you heard the commentators from when the play orginially happened as well as them commenting on the replay.

All in all it just sucked.. How many times do we gotta see the crowd?

I guess im just used to the polish production that Fox and NBC have done for years..

Anyway.. Rant over.

i didn't notice a huge difference, but i don't like how you have to have cable to watch the games on ESPN. I have cable, but i know quite a few that still don't.

Since Monday Night Football is no longer the most watched game or the most anticipated, only makes sense they lose their caliber of hosting. Although, it didn't bother me nearly as much as it bothered you apparently.

What did annoy the shit out of me was the very first game FOX broadcasted. Everytime they changed a statistic on the screen they had this god awful fucking obnoxious sound play. It was so annoying I stopped watching the game 10 minutes into the first quarter. They didn't do it during the 2nd game tho so I'm guessing they're not doing it anymore at all.

ah - good to know, i had no idea

the one thing that i wish stations would do is leave the entire screen open for the field. i was watching the World Cup and other shows on international channels and noticed that the scoreboard would pop out from the edge of the screen periodically, but for the most part the entire screen would be for viewing the game. I think the US should do this as well.

Didnt ESPN do that? Every 5 min or so, the little scrolling thing would show stats/scores at the bottom and you could still see the field...

Madden?? yeah at least he provides some insight...or is that stand-up ?

"So like right there you see is where the quarterback has to make a throw you see because thats what a pass is...a throw"..

“When your arm gets hit, the ball is not going to go where you want it to.”

“Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they're bigger than everybody else, and that's what makes them the biggest guys on the field.”

“I think comparisons are odious.”

"A lot of the teams that are playing this week are probably not going to make it to the Superbowl" - Said during week 2 of 2006

"See the guys in the white jerseys have to push back the guys in the blue jerseys and the guys in the blue jerseys are trying to push back the guys in the white jerseys."

" I think when you talk about a Mike Shanahan offense it's got to be about, the offense."

Al: "So who do you think will win?"
John: "Well, in football, the team that scores the most points is going to win."

Madden sucks. Let him go wander around in his nursing home and reap the millions for providing voiceovers for video games.

I disliked the way that ESPN put the "stat bar" right in the figgin bottom middle of the screen - that showed the score, time left, down, etc. FOX was much nicer with the very thin bar at the top. Didn't cover up as much real estate.

Anyway, Madden still sucks.

Madden does NOT suck. YOU SUCK. He is a piece of nastalgia. No, he's not brilliant. But his voice and his X's and O's are classic. Kinda like tradition. Most of those quotes are probably taken out of context, but regardless... you think Football, you don't think Chris Collinsworth, you think Madden.

Also, Soccer and Football are different games (<--- Madden type quote). Scores happen more frequently than in soccer and the clock plays a big part of the game unlike in soccer where the score changes maybe 5 times and the clock is constantly running.

Now let me get to MNF. MNF is not dead. At least not for me. They could put that on fucking Lifetime or the Oxygen network and I'd still watch it. Why? Cause it's monday night and it's the only game on the schedule. I agree that ESPN's broadcast sucked. I enjoyed watching Sunday Night Football previous years and this was substandard to that. I did not really hear the color commentary from Cornheiser. I loved him on PTI, but he's just not interesting in the booth. Maybe it was nerves, but when Jammie Foxx came into the booth, you could see Tony C fiddling with his pen while talking to Foxx the same way Spud plays with his pecker while talking to girls.

I'm still gonna watch, but yes MNF has taken a dip in terms of quality.
