Everybody take a breath and...Solve the Bridge Riddle - November 15, 2007, 12:18 PM

During WWII, there was a bridge connecting Germany and Switzerland, and on the German side, there was a sentry tower with a guard in it. He would come out every three minutes to check on the bridge, and he had orders to turn back anyone who tried to get into Germany, and shoot anyone trying to escape without a pass. There was a woman who desperately needed to get into Switzerland, and she knew she didn't have time to get a pass. It would take her at least six minutes to cross the bridge, but she managed to do it.

How?

Seems like she crossed halfway and turned around pretending to come back.

She crossed the bridge during the 1st 3 min when the guard was not looking.
Turned around to head back.
The guard followed orders and set her back to Switerland which took her 3 more min.

She walks about 1.5 minutes out on the bridge, then turns around headed back for Germany just as the sentry comes out to check in 3 minutes. Guard assumes she's coming from Switzerland and turns her around to be on her way. 3 minutes later, she's in Switzerland.

My way works too, and I didn't take ten minutes to answer it.

I disagree. She's leaving from right under the guard's nose. If she's less than half way, still in his half, when he looks again, he'll know she left from his side. If she goes to the half way mark and turns around, he may think she's come from the other direction, covering half the distance of the bridge in the 3 min he was eating doughnuts. So half is the answer.
