External Hard Drive - August 15, 2007, 01:37 PM

Hey all -

I have too much music and stuff on my computer and the hard drive is almost full - I want to get an external or a 2nd hard drive of some kind for media only - any reccomendations?

How much should I spend? What should I look for? I'm pretty stupid on this stuff.

I'd stay away from Western Digital.

+1 their cases crap out all of the time.

R.I.P. Eric. You were truly like a younger brother to me. May you live on in all those you helped and reached out to help. You are truly missed!

tfinch: well, actually, if he did, that's fine cause it's in the pockets!

It wasn't cases I had problems with. The WD drive in my laptop quit on me in December. I got an external WD to recover all my files and after a week it was making the tick of death, completely shot. Seagate for me.

good to know on the western digital. I definitely don't need a terabyte - i just want to put media on and the HD on my computer right now is only 80 gigs. I'm gonna look into seagate for a min then.

For media playback, does HD spin speed matter? Is USB 2.0 fast enough?

My monitor is now crapping out too so cost is an issue (as it looks like I'll have to buy one of those as well)

thanks for all the help so far though, you guys have been great!

you say you don't need a TB now but you will in the future as your media collection grows.

you really think so? How long will an external hard drive last me?

The reason i'm trying to be cheap on this is i'm drooling over an exhaust for my bike, but the price tag is $850. On top of that, my monitor is about to kick it for good...

I really appreicate all the help!

How fast of a refresh speed do I need for media playback?

I have a 320GB Maxtor external HD at home and it works wonderfully. At work, I've got a 500GB external Western Digital, and no problems with it either.

Best Buy has a 250GB Seagate external drive for $99, and a 320GB Western Digital for same price (found them online)
