Exxon Mobil 2Q profit sets US record

By JOHN PORRETTO, AP Business Writer
HOUSTON - Lifted by record crude prices, Exxon Mobil says its second-quarter earnings rose nearly 14 percent to $11.68 billion, the biggest quarterly profit ever by any U.S. corporation.
The world's largest publicly traded oil company said Thursday its net income for the April-June period came to $2.22 a share, up from $10.26 billion, or $1.83 a share, a year ago.
Revenue rose 40 percent to $138.1 billion from $98.4 billion in the year-earlier quarter.
Excluding an aftertax charge of $290 million related to an Exxon Valdez court settlement, earnings amounted to $11.97 billion, or $2.27 per share.
Analyst on average expected Exxon Mobil to earn $2.52 a share on revenue of $144 billion, according to a survey by Thomson Financial. The estimates typically exclude one-time items.

Really? Why exactly?

You do realize that they make a little over 8 cents on the dollar. What exactly would you like them to do? Drop the price at the pump by 4 cents (to share half of their profits) - oversimpliying things, because most of their profit is downstream, I believe, so they would actually be losing more than half of their profit)? Is that really going to make a difference?

They paid about $100 billion in taxes and duties last year.

Bad ExxonMobil! How dare they run a business!

Oil does not cost more to pump out of the ground than 8 years ago. It is making 4 times the profit now.

That money, the 300% more IS being realized somewhere... although the gas stations are not the culprit.

It does not cost more, it costs about the same on a percentage of revenue basis. Their production costs dropped slightly from 9% to 8%. What does cost more are the oil purchases. Their costs of purchases went up from 41% to 49%, so they are actually not passing on the costs as much as they were in 1999 (i.e., they are making less profit per barrel). Where they have done well is reducing selling, general, and administrative expenses as a percentage of revenues, and reduced sales and excise taxes. For shame.
