Arrow Facebook co-founder unfriends USA government. - May 11, 2012, 04:26 PM

"The practice of renouncing U.S. citizenship, though still extremely rare, is becoming more common: 1,781 Americans did it in 2011. That's up 16% from 2010 and is nearly eight times the number who expatriated in 2008, according to the U.S. Treasury."

Facebook co-founder renounces U.S. citizenship - May. 11, 2012

This is probably because the world is getting flatter and more Americans are living in many other parts of the world.

And in many parts of the world, it can be a PIA to be an American because of various rules USA makes people and foreign governments follow (like foreign banks reporting bank accounts of US nationals, etc)

Probably for financial reasons. He's South American born if memory serves and as a US citizen he would have would have to pay American tax rates and capital gains on the billion or so he's about to make.

Lots of US expats and retirees are sick of having to file US taxes every year, even though they haven't stepped foot in the US for decades. USA is (maybe?) the only country that taxes it's citizens on income earned anywhere in the world.

What is interesting to me is that Michelle Bachmann is lying her ass of about Swiss citizenship and it has received so little press. I wonder what her district will say about this come November...

Pretty much. So long as you have not committed any violent crimes or massive fraud/theft, if you're a billionaire (or even multi-millionaire) any country will grant you citizenship and do so with open arms.

I wonder what the policy is on granting these people tourist visas to the USA if they want to visit friends/family...
