Feedback: Anyone Driven/Own a Ford Edge? - November 20, 2011, 05:15 PM

I have been thinking of going the Crossover route for the next ride and the Edge checks off every category box I need at the moment: AWD, car like handling, mild towing capability, mild off roadability, relatively moderately priced, decent MPG.

Engine choices are either the Mustang's V6 or a Ford Ecoboost 4 banger. I have read nothing but good things about the Ecoboost engine line, which is one of the reasons this has peaked my interest. Trannies are all 6 speed varieties.

I know most of the F guys on here swing either F-series or Mustang, but I have seen more of these on the road lately. I was wondering if anyone had any behind the wheel or ownership feedback? I may schedule a test drive while I am in N.C. over the holiday weekend.

My sister and brother in law have really enjoyed theirs. They've had it nearly a year and no problems. Technology was user friendly cause even my sister can use it.

Had one for my rental car a few times and loved it. Solid feeling, good power. If I was looking for a mid size crosser SUV I'd get one.

I looked at the Ford last year when we bought. (edit, it was actually this year) Engines are amazing, no doubt. There were two deal breakers for us, though.
1) Rental fleet. If I ever wanted to sell it there would be a million retired rental units to compete with. Resale sucks.
2) Braking on the Edge is well below the competition. Now, maybe with aftermarket pads? I don't know. Point is, I bought a new vehicle because I didn't want to do a thing to it.

I've driven my friends for a little bit. Seemed very solid and had an unexpected amount of power.

I did some forum skimming and it seems MyTouch electronics package is an intermittent problem. Some have no issues whatsoever, others all but had to have the whole console replaced under warranty.

A software update seems to have fix many of the complaints. Still, admittedly, that is a concern for me. A budget oriented vehicle packed with a technology package usually reserved for higher end cars and developed by Microsoft usually means a tradeoff w/respect to quality and cost was made somewhere.

How do you enter Ctrl + Alt + Del on a car?

Resale, not a big concern for me. I tend to drive cars until the wheels fall off before I replace them. I don't think I've ever gotten rid of a car that had less than 150K mi on the odo. But, I have read continuously I may add, that the Edge's brakes are poor and doing an upgrade both pad and discs is highly recommended.

Shame Ford cut corners on this one considering they tout the towing stability anti-sway technology and that it's rated for 3700lbs / Class 2. Brakes.

From someone who is buying and trading cars every day... this is only a major concern if you buy a "plain-jane" base vehicle.
Be it a Focus, RAV4, Edge, etc... if it has options (wheels, sunrrof, etc) Used Car Managers have no problem paying up for it. If it is a base, it will in fact get lost in a sea of rentals for sure. Just some thing to think about.

Same thing a coworker did when his MyTouch locked up (kills AC/Radio/everything). Put the car in neutral, turn it off and back on.... I don't want Microsoft in my car.
