F-16. Plane crashed in Clinton on Dalmacia and Maui. Reported to have live ammo and munitions. Helo swooped in and retrieved pilot. Some people are going to be able to go home tonight.

It was a flight of four using the callsign Bully. I think it was Bully2 that went down because I could hear ATC talking to 1,3 and 4.

Really thankful no one was hurt. With the population density around DC, it could have been a lot worse.

Correction. Plane had just taken off from Andrews!
Even worse. Full load of fuel. Right USAF has reported the initial cause appears to be an engine malfunction.

Pilot is a 31 year old Lieutenant.

Salute to him for managing to stick and rudder his broken bird into the woods.

Based on eyewitness reports he punched out below 5,000 ft.

ATC comms starting about 14 minutes into it. Can't hear the jets because they are on the UHF frequency that is not on the feed.

External fuel tank was dropped at National Harbor.

Thanks for the audio link.

Question for the pilots here (Fitz, you around?): Does it get easier to interpret what they are saying on aircraft comms after you've listened in for a while? I understand most of the terminology and the order in which they will say it (e.g., BRA calls, vector and QRF for landing), but I have a heck of a time distinguishing precisely what is being said with the voice quality over the radios.

I also have a lot of trouble when I'm listening to people with unfamiliar accents. It takes me a while to actually comprehend the sounds I am hearing and associate them with familiar words.

I assume that practice and experience make a major difference in this.
