First time in Cali---have any advice? - August 4, 2009, 08:14 PM

I am going to California next Tuesday for a week and a half. It's my first time going and don't know where to go, where not to go and all that good stuff. We are flying into San Francisco and have rented a convertible to drive around. We are flying out of San Diego so we were thinking of just taking the Pacific Coast Highway down while making a pit stop in Vegas.

So my question is do you have any suggestions such as cool places to stop for food or touristy things to go see along the way? So far the only two things we have planned is renting dirtbikes in San Diego for a tour of the desert and also a trip to Sea World. I know there is a ton of stuff to do so let me know what you know! Thanks!

Valley of Fire outside of Vegas. Don't waste your time with Red Rock.

San fran - alcatraz, pier 19, seal beach
do yourself a favor and drive 3 hours to lake tahoe if u have not been there. Spend the night, rent mountain bikes, casinos in south lake tahoe.

Head back to 1 for the nice drive south

LA sucks. Worst case studio walk and stupid stuff like santa monica pier

san diego rocks...do the safari at wild life refuge and get the upgraded tour that takes you in to the exhibits. I have done that twice and feeding rhinos by hand is one of the coolest things ever. Seeing a cheeta run (pay extra) at 70mph in front of u is also mind blowing.

Hang out in gas lamp, get hammered....eat at nobu. Stay in marina area and u can walk to all the bars and navy tours. San diego is best city in CA, and i am from LA with family in san fran still.

I say skip vegas....11 wasted hours in car when it is a cheap direct flight from dc. The drive from la is way fucking hot for a convertible.

I get my info from Fox news:

Everyone there is gay and liberal. Only 1 out of 47 people eat meat and that one person is also visiting. The state flower is the penis and the state bird is the swallow.
They have cars that run on sweat from gay sex and I heard they have a Terminator who runs the show.
The state song is the song they played when Copeland and Blankes walk into the blue oyster bar.

In-N-Out Burger. They are everywhere out there and if you don't love it, then you may not be human. I grew up there and everytime I go home for fun or work, the first stop after the airport is the nearest In-N-Out joint.

+1 to evArythang!!!

I go to the west coast quite a bit for business and I have done all of this. Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to...not to mention it's pretty close to the bunny ranch
Follow the above post and enjoy your west coast trip.

You could consider driving down Route 1. It's right next to the coast and has some incredible views. About 3 hrs south of San Fran there's Hearst Castle. Beautiful national park that was donated to the Cali Govt. Continue 1-2 hours and you will come across Morro Bay. Pretty cool place to stop for a few hours.

Continue another 3-4 hours or so down Route 1 and it will take you through Santa Barbara, Malibu, and Santa Monica.

Finally, you'll end up close to LA. You can take Route 101 and cut into LA to see Hollywood, if you're into that.

Continue south to your SD destination

it REALLY depends on what you are looking for... nature (Lake Tahoe is kinda far but worth the drive, Redwood forests, Sonoma Wine Country, Pt. Reyes), party scene (SF Club Scene is pretty good, some world class DJs show up at venues like Ruby Skye), good riding/driving (some of the coastal areas have great roads for bike/car), cultural stuff (tons of museums, the Exploratorium, SF MoMA, Legion of Honor, etc.), touristy stuff (Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach area, Chinatown, Pier 39), hippie-freak alternatives (Haight Ashbury, Berkeley), food (every cuisine available can be found in San Fran)... there's tons of stuff to do there.. I grew up in San Francisco, and that city alone can take 2 weeks of visit, let alone taking PCH down to Santa Barbara and the rest of SoCal... just don't go to Tijuana, which is just across the border from SD... things have gotten really dangerous there lately...

Anyways, I will reiterate the DO NOT BOTHER DRIVING TO VEGAS part... cheaper and faster to fly... from the NoVA area...

Wow thanks for the responses everyone! I was planning to take a 'quick' detour to lake tahoe and then head back to the coast. As for LA...I just wanna go see how bad to the ass Compton is and I really want to cruise up and down crenshaw bumpin' ol school tupac. But the GF wants to do all the touristy things like see celebrity houses and stuff--eh whatever makes her happy I suppose.

As for driving to Vegas...well I really want to drive through the Mojave--- especially at night. I am flying out there in October so I am not going there for a big blow out or anything.

Again, thanks for responses and keep them coming!

If you drive down the PCH 1.. definitely do so from San Fran to LA at least.

PCH 1 south of san fran gets ya Big Sur, Cayucos, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara then LA. With of course lots in between

I lived in Cayucos for 10+ years.. its a great spot to stop and have a cold beer & great food right on the beach.

*sigh*

Fat Burger sucks, but try it anyway. Go to a real CPK (the one in Solana Beach).

Pier 39 in SF. ...and check out Spud's thread for more in SF
