The Floor On Tablet Pricing Is Falling: Amazon Fire $199, $79 Kindle

The Floor On Tablet Pricing Is Falling: Amazon Fire $199, $79 Kindle - September 28, 2011, 10:21 AM

HP Touchpad $99/$149 was a fire sale, but these are natural price points for Amazon. They're rolling out loss leaders in order to run the razor & blades model. Plus the Fire running on a full Android build. Yeah, the screen is only 7inches - but it actually makes it a bit more portable and one-hand holdable than a full-sized 10 inch tablet.

Amazon's making it almost impossible not to own a Kindle in one form or another. If you just want an ereader, the $79 Kindle is 30% lighter (5.98 ounces) than previous Kindles. A $99 version will add touch navigation. And the top-of-the-line Kindle touch 3G is $149, with the free 3G access. All three models still sport the e-ink technology.
The Kindle Fire Tablet is the big announcement, today, however. This souped-up Kindle is also an Android tablet with dual-core processor, a multi-touch IPS display, and light 14.6 ounce weight. To get to the inexpensive $199 price point, Amazon left out a camera and microphone, and it will only be available with Wi-Fi, not 3G. Some neat details:
  • The Whispersync technology that brings ebooks quickly to Kindles will work to sync movies and TV shows from Amazon's growing library to the Fire.
  • A new Silk browser, which partially resides on Amazon's cloud servers, pre-loads pages to speed up browsing.
  • Starts shipping November 15; you can pre-order today.

Pre-ordered the fire tablet, should make a great gift.

I just hope the screen is as good as the Nook Color.

Aside from the processor (which, without any numbers is certainly hit/miss) it's not really better than the Nook Color. It also lacks a memory slot which limits everyone to the 8GB on board.

That is why they would not discount the HP Touchpad when it was discontinued. They knew they were moments away from releasing their own tablet.

It's directly connected to the Cloud so onboard memory expandability is not really much of a concern.

Would be nice if it came with 3G connectivity like the Kindle Touch 3G, which I still do not understand how they offer FREE 3G service on.

True. They could make HP just take them back.

The cloud storage is nice if you don't un-nooter the OS in the future and also have an internet connection when you need your stuff. Unfortunately, with only 8GB of storage you wouldn't be able to load a bunch of movies for a trip/etc.

The 3G part is easy, amazon is paying a really small amount per unit considering the data consumption is likely to be very small throughout the life of the device.

Gotcha. Ok.
So I take it the Kindle 3G is not a full fledged App & Internet device like other tablets.
That's how they can get away with offering free 3G.

Pretty much determined the Kindle Fire to be a slightly redesigned Blackberry Playbook with no cameras, less storage, and slightly different dimensions.

So the cores will likely be running at 1ghz which isn't too bad.

^^^So the question is, should we hold out for the fire sale on Blackberry Playbooks? Because I do not see them being able to make an impact in this market anymore. They might as well pull out and focus on getting their phone strategy together.... quickly.

I would guess just that, they are dwindling away quickly and might just make that last ditch effort like HP and push out some goods for really cheap only to catch a bit of the spotlight.

The cameras and added storage would certainly be worth it.
