It's very cool, but it stirs-up the old "Is Aqua Man gay?" debate once again.

There is no debate, Aqua Man is gay.

How do they deal with no air to the engines for larger subs?

Nowdays they use nuclear plants and electric motors on the really large subs, lots of batteries on the small ones. the old diesel subs usually charged batteries with their engines at snorkel depth, although some could run for a bit on air stored in sub.

This reminds me of my days in college building and racing human powered submarines. They were a bit smaller than this one, and had 2 guys in it, one pedaling, one driving. It was a wet sub, so you're locked into this tiny ass sub and you're doing everything with a scuba regulator in your mouth, because there is no air compartment in the sub.

They are fairly easy to build, just a fiberglass shell, and bike parts for propulsion.. lots of fun to play around in as long as you dont mind being cramped into a tiny egg shape underwater. those things could get going really fast, but if it's really easy to ascend too fast in them if you point it up, possibly leadign to the bends. With this one being pressurized, it wouldnt have those problems. they should just make it electric and forget the whole gas engine part, unless its a generator for charging.

Do you think having enough batteries would hurt their weight or volume targets?

Well, when you consider its a 300 lb engine, plus tranny, plus gas tank, I'd say you could fit a decent amount of battery storage in there, especially with battery technology increasing as it is. That's weightwise, volumewise batteries tend to take up a bit more room, but you can usually spread packs around a bit easier allowing you to cram more of them in there as well as use them for ballast. But hey, they make subs for a living, i don't, im sure batteries were considered.

that's the other thing, is such a small sub, weight, ballast, COG are all huge factors, and I'd guess the depleting of a fuel tank would seriously screw with the trim settings.
