Former Marine needs a hook-up with building materials - October 19, 2011, 05:29 PM

Can we help this guy out? If anyone here is able to get some of these things at cost or cheap, I think he'd greatly appreciate it. I can help transporting any materials you may have or have access to.

Fmr Marine searching for free / low cost building materials (Wheaton, MD)

Date: 2011-10-19, 2:31PM EDT Reply to: sale-9c9dw-2631144220@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

I am a former Marine who has finally purchased a home after many yrs of renting. Only catch is that the home is very small and in deperate need of serious renovations (old farm house in the mtns). The electric wiring is ancient and needs to be replaced ASAP. I am also building an addition (bedrooms) for my family. I do not have a lot of money to work with and will be doing most of the work myself. You will find a list of items that I am looking for. I have a truck and can pick up any items you may have available.

I am hoping that you may have a few of these items cluttering up your garage and would rather see them put to good use. I am also open to any advice you may have on where to find low cost/free (new or used) materials.

Items searching for include: -Electrical wiring, receptacles, switches, electrical boxes, circuit breaker box, etc. -lumber for framing -masonry blocks ( to build support pillars) -Plywood or other sheathing materials -Insulation -windows (any size) -roofing materials -nails, screws, misc hardware -other "family farm" related items

My family and I will be very grateful for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Location: Wheaton, MD it's NOT ok to contact this poster with servicesor othercommercial interests

I saw that too. I figured it was just his way of describing the type of house it is. I already sent him an email asking for his contact info, so if anything seems fishy with his response I'll post up. Aside from that, his ad is pretty well written and cohesive.

Yeah let us know, but I'm skeptical bout that post too.... He may have just put location Wheaton hoping to get people from Wheaton looking? Anyway hope he's not in MoCo or he'll be up shits creek trying to build on his house with misc pieces... sounds like no permits, so he better not have any nosey ass neighbors to snitch on him.

Speaking of building materials, I still need to give you that heat gun back. You going to Hooters tomorrow night?

Also, I sent him an email asking him to clarify the above. I'll post up once he responds.

I'm pretty sure I've got a bunch of DOT4 here, shoot me a txt to remind me to check tomorrow. I'll be at Hooters rain or shine, I'll cage it if I need to.

Copied and pasted from my email:

I understand why some people would be confused if they looked closely at the ad. We currently rent the house in Wheaton, MD and our 2yr lease is complete and now live here on a month-to-month agreement with our landlord. We operate a business in our home (which we are in the process of selling) which is why we still have a footprint in MD. One month ago we purchased 26 acre old family farm in WV about an hour NE of Charleston. We got a great deal on the property but the house is very small and was originally built in 1910 and has multiple issues. I have a good friend who is a retired electrician who is doing all of the electrical work. I placed the ad to see if I could save some money since there is a long list of issues to address. I don't care if I get a mixed bag of materials because there are so many big and small projects that nothing will go to waste. Since we are currently paying for two properties (renting one and own the other)...money is very tight. I travel up there almost every weekend to do work. I know that Craig's List is full of dirtbags and conartists. I am simply not one of them. I just didn't feel like telling my whole life story in the original ad.

Hope this clarifes my situation.

I'd be inclined to help a fellow Marine, but in the interest of clarity and due to the common abuse of charity through supposed former military service; ask him which unit he last served with and when. Ask him the name of his CO. I'm not trying to be a prick, but those two things can all be checked into.

Lots of people I know would be happy to help, and lots of people would be hurt if this wasn't legit.

This

some vetting is in order before people give him free shit

This is a good method:

You: Hey dude, what unit did you serve in

Him: Oh man, i was in <insert unit here>

You: Oh yeah, that was at Camp <some camp the unit isn't at>, right?

Him: YEAH MAN, I was at camp <some camp that unit isn't at>

You: actually, that unit is at camp <the actual location>
