Funny response to cl ad I have live - June 15, 2013, 08:37 PM

So I'm sellin some Thule roof racks for $140 and this guy lowballed me at 75 bucks. So I said no. Yadda yadda ill throw it on my wife's car for that price. And dude responds with this lmao

Confucius says : Craigslist items are only worth what a buyer is willing to pay - lol.

I got $80 to trade you for an item you have absolutely no need for. If you want to store it or put in on a car that will get no use- I get it. You are trying to get what you think it's worth. If you cannot find a buyer my offer stands.

Let me know. I have a few other racks I'm looking at- but you are the closest to where I live.

He just wants it now. And is frustrated he may have to pay full retail. I think his response would be better worded as below:

Confucius says : Craigslist items are only worth what a buyer is willing to pay at any point in time. Value of items fluctuate depending on the available pool of buyers.

Depending on how badly you want it gone respond back politely, explain how you arrived at your price, offer to meet him halfway on your asking/his offer. And message him back this...

Confucius says : Craigslist items require a willing seller to consummate a sale.

His reasoning is fine, but offering almost 50% is insulting. I doubt I would have responded.

Making an offer is one thing but 50% of what your asking for is a bit of a stretch.

There may be a person out there who makes a living buying low and selling high. Buy a Thule rack at a third of list price, sell it on ebay for two thirds list price, make money.

I lowball all the time on stuff I don't need. Just kind of want. The worst the seller can say is no. Occasionally I get a response a few weeks later saying they will take my offer amount.

Overall the buyer is correct. The item is worth what someone will pay for it.

Then again... That's just me.

Depending on my mood I would have either ignored it or countered at $150.

I would have replied, "Deal! For $75 you can have one side of the roof rack.
For an extra $65, I'll sell you the other side - a 13% discount!

He made an offer, and lowball or not you gave him the courtesy of a response (no). Really, if he is unwilling to pay more (but his offer still stands, should you you change your mind), all he had to do is say THAT in his response... and spare you the cornball philosophy and lesson in economics.

At a swap meet this weekend an old man offered me $20 for some original Ford Model A hoods that I had marked $100. I told him I would smash them with a baseball bat before I sold them for $20. He seemed a little put off. F him.
