Ghostrider to Tower, Top-Gun 2 Is A Go. - October 28, 2010, 11:18 AM

‘Top Gun 2′ Is A Go! Tony Scott Confirms He’s Got A Missile Lock On Directing » MTV Movies Blog

Tony Scott has most definitely not lost that loving feeling. The action-minded director has confirmed that he's locked in and ready to take wing as the director of "Top Gun 2."

Chatter of a "Top Gun" sequel began heating up about two weeks ago, when we caught wind of a very credible report that Paramount had approached director Scott, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and star Tom had been approached about reuniting for a follow-up to the 1986 airborne classic that marked Scott's first big blockbuster and set Cruise's career on a Mach-5 trajectory to instant superstardom.

Scott acknowledged that he would be directing "Top Gun 2" in an interview with Hit Fix at this weekend's junket for the runaway train blockbuster "Unstoppable." While Scott wouldn't address rumors of Cruise's involvement in a smaller role, he did expound upon his idea for a sequel, one that addresses just how much military aviation has changed in the past 25 years.

"I'm not waiting for a script. I'm going to do my homework. I'm going down to I think it's Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it's a whole different world now," Scott told Hit Fix. "These computer geeks -- these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada, and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night."

This sounds slightly less dramatic than the up-close-and-personal dog-fighting in the original "Top Gun," but Scott promised that he will address the end of the age of Maverick-esque fighter pilots. "These guys are still test pilots and they manned the drones when they were first running them," he said.

As for when we'll see "Top Gun 2" buzz the tower on the big screen, Scott said that he has at least one more film on his plate to do before the sequel -- he's attached to direct both "Emma's War" and "Potsdamar Platz," though it's unclear what the timetable is on those. Either way, it likely will be at least a couple years before "Top Gun 2" becomes a reality. So Kenny Loggins has plenty of time to compose another kick-ass soundtrack.

I'm not really seeing the "danger-zone" here. I mean where is the badass renegade cowboy element?

Oh my God the new Maverick is so bad ass... he drones while leaning back in has chair! After his best bro and co-pilot leaned too far and fell back and bumped his head, he lost his edge...

This is total bullshit! I do not approve... at all... one bit... not even a little

I'm like, what's going to be the "hero" plane? A 20 year old F/A-18 with upgraded avionics? Cause the Navy ain't flying F-22's.

The only aircraft movie I'd really like to see a remake of is Firefox.

yeah I don't see this going anywhere good.

A remake I could say mmmm...maybe...BUT a sequal. NO. I mean the story ended in the first one ...no NEED for a sequal.

What are you going to show Maverick as the coffee drinking bald flight instructor now? Why take a perfectly good film and ruin it???

Now I'd like to see a film based on the lives of soldiers at boot camp or an academy again....not some BS propaganda on the war...but just in the lives of what they do each day.

It was like Iron Eagles 2.

WTF? There really was no need for it. Iron Eagles 1 did everything it was supposed to. It ended the way it should have. WTH did they do a 2 for?

Oh, and why doesn't Chappy get more props. It's always Iceman and Maverick -- Iceman and Maverick ... but no one every talks about Chappy!

Chappy would talk to you from the beyond like Obi-Wan did Luke. Maverick and Iceman couldn't! They were too busy striking poses for the camera and and doing pensive looks.
