Going to Japan - May 28, 2009, 12:17 PM

I'm leaving for a 9 day trip to Japan next Wednesday. I'm looking for cool places to go, things to do (and not do), and any form of advice.

I plan on going to Motegi, Suzuka, Kyoto; that's not going to fill 9 days, I need more place! I'll be staying in Tokyo, with my girlfriend, so no hand-job bars or hookers. Unless I can convince her...

Definitely check out the Tokyo fish market. You really have to get there early, like 5-6 AM so it's something good to do when you first get there and are adjusting to the time. While you're there, get some fresh sushi from some of the vendors, guarantee it's the best sushi you'll ever have. Oh, and it's accessible via the subway.

I definitely want to check out the fish market. Is it called "fish market" or is there another name? Thanks for the info on time, I would have gone around 11am.

Harajuku was the hip/trendy area all the times I visited so I assume it still is. Last visit I was told to shy away from Shinjuku at night because the Chinese Mafia have moved in. There are two huge department stores ("depato") in Ikebukuro, Seibu and Tobu. One of them has a nice aquarium on the top penthouse level. It's really pretty good. Ropongi is where all the gaijin (foreigners) traditionally hung out (and hence Japanese chicks who wanted to pick them up).

Shibuya is where you can find all the kogals (ko = child, gal = "garu" = girl).

Kogal:

Make sure to swing by Nara while you're in Kyoto. That's where the Todaiji Temple is.

Mt. Fuji climbing season does not begin until after July 1, but any of the other hiking opportunities--and there are many--are worth while. It's still rainy season there, however. Hope you don't expect your shoes to dry out.

Hamamatsu - nice beaches.

Yokohama - nice Chinatown

Matsushima - Very nice seaside city and travel destination near Sendai. Lots to do.

If you have a chance to visit a hot springs (onsen), I highly recommend it. I need to get in touch with someone to get a specific recommendation.

You'll find it both expensive and time-intensive traveling in Japan so don't be too disappointed if you don't get to do very much.

It is Pyramid that you speak of with the lions in front.

And ou were hanging out in the wrong places my friend. You have to go over to the university to have an amazing time!

R.I.P. Eric. You were truly like a younger brother to me. May you live on in all those you helped and reached out to help. You are truly missed!

Awesome advice, thanks. I've got the rail pass so as long as it's a *bullet* train it'll be *free*. I hope the local trains don't cost too much. I want to do Fuji, and I realize it's out of season but I was thinking of the gondola ride.

I know about rain season, but have you been there while it's rain season? Is it that bad? Will it rain everyday?
