Google maps released for iPhone - December 12, 2012, 11:05 PM

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/goog...585027354?mt=8

It's not coming up in the search yet, if you download it from iTunes, it will get pushed to your iPhone.

Yea, I haven't had a problem with it either. I have just always preferred google maps over anything else I've tried.

I use waze, because it alerts me to cops sitting in the median running radar, as long as someone else using waze has marked them when they passed through ahead of me.

Day to day, it works on occasion. On holiday travels, it is awesome. More people are using it.

Yes, Waze is awesome for driving. These days I'm just a city pedestrian that stinks of formaldehyde - I need Google maps with transit.

I've grown to like Apple Maps.. they've gotten much better over the last few months and I feel the UI is much cleaner.

Google Maps you have to zoom in too far to see one way roads on the iPhone app.

But I'll give google maps a whirl this weekend to see if I like it or not.

I had traffic and everything working perfectly.

So far it's better in my area than IOS maps. I was able to see more businesses and stores

...yet.

That app was decidedly NOT ready for prime time. It's all the more bewildering when you know Apple still had another year under contract with Google to support the old Apple maps app.

? It's not getting worse, its getting better.

Granted, the released version was beta-quality and should have been held off (which is likely why people lost their jobs over it), but it has vastly improved over the last few months.

I feel the UI is cleaner and less cluttered and faster (less data consumed since it is vector based) than Google Maps

iOS maps is a cloud based system. The more users using it, the more data their is for Apple's servers and the better (or rather more accurate and layered) it gets.

But to your point, the vectoring makes it less data and processor consumptive and of course it is integrated with SIRI and the other APIs throughout iOS.

I never understood why Apple did not use (or even buy) a data aggregator company like TeleNAV to supply the back-end data and then on the front end, skin it with Apple's UI and layer their/user data.

I still think the IOS map sucks, just not as bad as when it first came out. I am glad the Google Map app is here. The traffic is way easier to read than the one on the IOS and contains more data (yellow, red, red and black) so you know how bad it is. All I see on the IOS map is dashed red.

Also there is no built in public transportation directions on the IOS map. It sends you to an outside application.

The IOS location data and searches will get better with time as people report missing stuff, but there is still work to be done on the app as well.
