Question GoPro Hero VS. Contour Roam or GPS - September 25, 2011, 07:16 PM

Has anyone used these units and have an opinion one way or the other on a comparison?

I know the ROAM is pretty new.

I've owned both the Go Pro (Previous to the HD versions), the Contour 1080, and Contour GPS.

I don't like the frontal area of the Go Pro. I bought mine originally for roadracing. Waaaaay to square for that purpose. Video was ok. In a car it would be fine...from the cab. On a bike I think it's a bad choice.

I tried a really cheap Oregon Scientific video camera I happened upon walking through Sams Club. I thought the video wasn't as good as the Go Pro. But the operation of the camera on the OS version was a lot better.

The Contours - Easier controls for starting/stopping. Less frontal area for wind drag and/or catching on something like branches if you are riding offroad. Decent helmet mounting system as well.

Contour 1080 - Excellent video. Needed to dampen down the microphone sensitivity for the faster riding. (Even faster offroad riding had too much sound.)

Contour 1080 GPS - Pretty much identical to the 1080. Only addition I really used was the GPS capabilities. I bought it to figure out my speeds & tracks in some very serious offroad riding. Unfortunately the GPS didn't work as often as I would like. Supposedly it needed time to get a better lock. (I was up around 12,000 feet on the top of a mountain above the treeline.)

For now, unless you need the GPS capability, I would go with the 1080 HD version.

I have a bunch of videos from different cameras up on youtube. Unfortunately it always de-rez's them. The originals are pretty stunning.

Wrong. The Contour will do 60fps.

GoPro survived AFG. Good enough for me so now I have a pair of HD ones.

The new contour roam (replacement to the 1080) will not do 60 fps. The good news is that since it's been replaced the 1080 is $119 (street price)

AFG???

Here is some video from a Contour GPS from this past July.

Me: Don't go off the trail. It would be bad.

Buddy: Define bad.

Me: Splat.

Buddy: Splat?

Me: 300-500 feet of freefall though. That could be kinda cool.

Cool vid too Mud - crazy drops hah.
Have links to your other vids // youtube profile ?

Have any pics or suggestions on which mounts you used on your bike for the contours?
My biggest concern for the Contours are where would I mount it on the actual Bike. I like the GoPro's mounting stuff, the one for the passenger peg is nice etc.

The Contour(any 1080p model) has multiple recording modes.

1080p @ 30 fps
720p @ 30fps
720p @ 60 fps

I personally prefer to record at 720p/60fps but it use a little more than gig per 30 minutes.

Keep in mind that when you upload to most video sharing sites, they'll strip it and make it 30 fps anyways, ie Youtube.

The new Roam doesn't have a 60fps mode. Just the higher level two.

You guys think that would be a disqualifying factor for that specific model?

Contour+ has a 60fps mode I think, as well as external mic jack. I had to resist it when I got the gps. There's a good side by side comparison on YouTube.

@Nate - check out the video and then click on my name. It *should* show you my list of videos. I think I have around 50 out there now. Some better than others. I have several from Tasker's Gap locally.

IMHO no, youtube converts back to 30fps anyway.

But other than new buttons and being water proof to 1m and not doing 60fps it's the same as the 1080.

Exactly. The basic one should be fine in HD.
