Got a light? - October 8, 2008, 09:10 AM

Ok, so i'm kicking around an idea for an invention, but I need some input from folks to see how I should make it work...

The way I'm envisioning it now, it relies upon power from a car cigarette lighter plug, but it needs the power to shut off when the car is turned off. I know most modern cars have plugs that only have power when the key is on (acc circuit), but it seems that some of the older ones have power plugs that have power whether the car is on or off (batt circuit).

So my question is, does you car have a power plug that turns on or off with the car? If not, what car, what year? perhaps I can find a trend among brands.

Thanks

My '08 Subaru Outback cigarette lighter thing turns off when the car turns off. I think my old Ford Explorer from '97 did the same thing, but I can't remember for sure.

Most cars I have owned, new or old (BMW, Ford, Honda) have power to the cigarette lighter even when the car is off, which is good for me when I misplace my wall charger for my cell phone.

It just depends on how the car is wired... Most of the time you can just change a wire under the dash if you want it the other way

I totally understand that constant or switched power is easily available by going into the wiring, I'm just trying to come up w/ something that is completely mobile, plug'n'play, and requires no car modifications.

It seems that the trucks and SUV's have the constant power plugs, whereas regular cars have it switched, and some have both. Mind you i'm asking if there is a switched one available, that's the one I care about. Thanks again, keep the answers coming.

Steele, I might, as it seem that there are a coupel of patents that are fairly similar to what i'm thinking, mine is just simpler and more mobile as opposed to hard-wired... I'm just kicking the idea around for now.

My 06 Dodge Ram 2500 has a lighter outlet and several 12v outlets.
The lighter outlet loses power when the key is turned off but the 12v outlets stay powered all the time.

I think that for most scenarios the lighter goes off in foreign cars and stays on in domestic cars. That's the way I remember it anyways.

OVER? did you say "Over"? Nothing is over until we decide its over, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell No!!!

a good rule of thumb.

If it's an American made car it will have power to the lighter full time
If it's a foriegn made car the power will turn off with the vehicle.

All GM, Ford, Dodge, etc. to my knowledge have full time power
All Toyotas, Hondas, VWs I've owned all had ignition power
