Thumbs down Got rear-ended by an F-350! - June 8, 2012, 06:36 AM

Yesterday on my way home from work, a guy driving a big 'ol Ford F-350 wasn't paying attention and slammed into the back of me. Pretty significant damage to the whole rear of my car (plus any frame damage that might have occured.) It was his company truck and the responding police officers said it was absolutely his fault. So his company's insurance will definitely be paying for everything.

Barely any damage to the truck:

My car was a 2000 model with just shy of 165,000 miles on it. It was a champ and got me from A to B. Given the age and mileage of the car though, my feeling is that they'll total it out rather than pay for any repair. Sooooo I need to start looking for a new daily driver in the event that I need to buy a new one.

Depending on the age, mileage, and condition of the vehicle, my price range would be anywhere from $12,000 to maybe $26,000. Cars I'm currently looking around for are Subaru Legacy's (2.5i, non-gt model, years 2007-2009); maybe an acura sedan as long as it has awd, or contemplating a 2011-2012 used kia optima SX (turbo version.) If anyone has any leads on one of those cars, or something similar based on what I've mentioned so far, feel free to throw something my way, thanks.

Glad you are ok. But that's not a ton of damage. (But I would agree it's probably $1500+ for a repair which could total it given the age.)

I say an accident right next to our car a couple of weeks ago on rt 7 by Ashburn. Small car hitting another one pretty much all but full speed. Rear trunk was literally gone. Bumper was slammed up into the back seat basically. Both cars obviously totaled. Watch your six folks. Idiot season evidently.

That sucks but hopefully it pays out well.

Have you considered any small SUV's? RDX/RAV4?
How about the newer crossovers (price permitting)? Crosstour/ZDX
Sport sedans? is250 awd

My wife and I recently picked up a '10 Rav4 Sport V6, found one CPO'd with 10k miles. It's not the most fashionable but they're amazingly reliable, lots of storage, and it can tow 3,500lbs. Not to mention, the V6 model rav4 is the quickest car toyota makes right now

+1 to small SUVs. It's surprising how versatile they are.

My wife has an AWD Equinox. I've pulled bikes on a trailer with it, hauled shit, etc. Very useful, drives well, and gets decent gas mileage

Yea, I have thought about some small SUV's as a possibility, the acura's aren't too bad on the eye, or even the ford edge if I can get one with AWD. Really just debating if I want to get something cheap and then sell in 2-3 years, or just pay more now, and keep it for 10. Weighing all options at this point. Of course, it'll also depend on what the insurance companies say, and how much I'd get if in fact they decide to call it a total loss.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant ...
Faded paint ...

What happened was an improvement. Thank him.

Nah, glad to see everything turned out OK physically. Yes, the insurance company is going to total it out. As far as station cars, ping Johnny Speed 954 or LCFielder11 - they always seem to have used daily drivers for sale in the $4,000-9,000 range.

If you want to go up the price range a bit more, Wildjester runs the Pre-Owned car department at one of the local DARCAR dealerships (Frederick I think). He's good people and has gotten a number of people into cars on here. If he doesn't have something on his lot that fits the bill, he may be able to procure what it is you desire.

Flores and someone else (LadyPink ??) on here also work for dealerships and would be a good reference point.

F-350, huh? Back in 2000 I got creamed while waiting at a red light by a F-350 Contractor Truck with side utility tool boxes. Hit me so fucking hard it pushed me into the 1/3 of the way into the intersection where I was subsequently hit, albeitly lightly, by an oncoming car.
When I got out the car and approached him I thought he was drunk because his speech was slurred, disjointed, and his eyes glassy. Turned out the driver was a diabetic and had a hypoglycemic episode behind the wheel.

It totaled my 240SX which I had put $4,500 of work into 3 months earlier - the payout on the car was below value but the additional "We want to settle so you don't sue us" payment gave me the downpayment for my Condo.

I had a lady rear end me while I was driving my big ass ford several years back

I felt bad for her.

Front end of her car smashed, radiator cracked and pouring fluid.

My rear bumper/hitch?

Scratched, slightly bent

Poor broad. Maybe it taught her to pay attention

I can cosign this. I took an Edge w/the Ecoboost for a test drive last November and was pleasantly surprised.

It was the only normal everyday American passenger car that made me considered buying an American again - something I had sworn off since the 90's!

The only box I didn't check off were the brakes, which weren't fantastic. They felt a little spongy and undersized for its weigh. Probably cured with a compound swap or swapping with brakes from a bigger Ford product.

However the Ecoboost family of engines has been getting excellent marks in every size and did not feel overtaxed even though it was only a 4-banger pushing a SUVs weight.
