Unhappy Got Some Real Bad News Guys! - May 20, 2008, 08:43 PM

Hey there everyone! I wish that this was going to be a good news letter for you all, but since I already said "I wish"...I guess we all know by now that it's not. This is going to be a little lengthy, so I'll get right to it.

For about 2 months now, I thought that things were going pretty good for me. For those that didn't already know, I've been able to move my wrist a little for the last couple months, and the strength training was going okay. Well, this past Friday, I was back up at Duke seeing my neurologist, and then Monday I went to Augusta to see a new doctor, another hand and arm specialist for a 2nd opinion. And am I glad I went when I did. First I'll start w/what my neurologist said. He's real happy w/the way my arm movement is coming along, and the strength is descent, considering what I've been through. However, he did not share my excitement and joy with the wrist movement I've got. It turns out, my brain has found a way to "trick" my muscles into moving it. What does that mean? Well, I've always believed in the K.I.S.S. method...Keep It Simple Stupid. It means that the wrong muscle group is moving my wrist.
Now, on to some more bad news, dealing w/my visit to Augusta on Monday. First off, that doc agreed w/my neuro-guy from Duke, wrong muscle group operating the wrist...equals not good. From here, I'll just start at the top of my arm and work my way down. The humerus bone...the big one in my upper arm that broke and has a titanium rod going the length of it....for 8-9 months now, I've been told by my orthopedic that operated on me in the ER that the bone is doing good. He told me that from the extensiveness of the break, the bones would be separated a little, but that there was calcification build up around it and that it was doing as well as it could. He's told me repetitively that it was in good shape. Well, he was DEAD WRONG!!!! Turns out, those 2 bones are still completely separated and there is no growth at all around the break! The only thing keeping them from free floating around my arm is the fact that there's a metal rod holding them close together. And the rod, by the way...is too small for the hole in my bone, so the rod is moving around INSIDE my bone as well.
But wait, it gets better. (I told you this was a lengthy one). My wrist, let's move on to that now. My scaphoid bone, the one that broke and has the screw in it....it didn't heal. And it's basically just a piece of dead bone sitting in my wrist with a screw. And both my nerve guy from Duke and this new doc said that my chances of getting any more return movement in my wrist is not likely. This new specialist I saw in Augusta, (whose a military doc) said, and I quote..."Chances are slim to none, and slim already walked out the door." He does have an option to fix it though...partially. And this brings me to my up coming surgeries over the next year.
The first surgery, which will be done toward the end of June/early July after I back from leave, will be to fix the humerus bone. It may require a bone graft from my hip or somewhere, and then he'll take a plate ans screws and bolt the 2 pieces of bone together. Once he opens the arm up and takes a look, it may also require a nerve graft as well, don't know for sure yet on that.
The second surgery will be on the wrist, to remove my "dead in the water" scaphoid bone, and do a partial fusion of the remainder bones in my wrist. Obviously, I will not get close to 100% movement back in my wrist after this, but I will have some. After that heals and I've had time to recover from that one, the third surgery (which is also on the wrist) will involve some tendon transfers in and around the wrist. The tendons will come from with the same wrist and part of the forearm. It will give me some movement and functionality back in my hand.
A lot of crazy, whacked out stuff going on, isn't it? This hand and arm specialist comes very highly recommended, and he has done a very larger number of each of these surgeries before. He's just never done all three of them on the same person before! What can I say? when I do something, I do it all the way!!!
As always, I'll continue to keep everyone up to date as often as I can. I was really hoping that the prayers and well wishes were not going to be needed anymore, but as you've all read, that just isn't the case. Thank you for all the continued support, and stand by for the next time I've got something.

Damn man, sucks to hear you aren't healed up. I hope these next surgeries work out and help you get your arm and wrist as close to back to normal as possible. Best wishes to you and hope you make a full recovery. You will make it through this as long as you have faith it will work out and don't give up on yourself. Good luck with everything.

Hang in there Bobby. As surgeries are never a good thing, it can be a good thing to fix something that def needs fixing. Do what you have to do and we will always be here for you when you need to talk or anything else.

Thanks for keeping us all up to date on your progress.
